The isle of Gibraltar was ceded from Spain to the United Kingdom by the Treaty of Utrecht. This 300 year arrangement worked well until NATO & the EU brought Britain & Spain together as allies. Could be but most of Gibraltar's population is British so they would likely leave if it stopped being British.

It was the treaty that ended the War of Spanish Succession which was the last war of King Louis XIV of France. This ended France's attempts at hegemonic control over Europe until 100 years later with Napoleon.
