The American ACADEMY of Pediatrics says otherwise. The American College of Pediatrics is a fringe group that promotes parenting by heterosexual married couples. They're also a recognized hate group.

MAJ (Join to see) - It isn't so much "thinking" as it is "knowing". I can see how you would think that a 6 year old knows only what their parents and environments teach them. However, children who Express and early desire to be the opposite sex do so with no outside influence. This means that a family could raise a physically male child as a boy, and that child still may know they are female and insist consistently and persistently that they are female. This is completely different from a 6 year old boy saying "I'm Batman" one day and "I'm a pony" the next. Identity is internal and unchanging, and as a child goes through the formative years that teach the differences between the sexes, they will align with one or the other.

Take myself for an example. I was homeschooled in a Christian, conservative home in Texas. We didn't have Internet until I was 6 or 7. I only spent time with other Christian, conservative kids from other homeschooled families. When we did play with other kids, the girls would run off to their room to play dolls, and I would run off with the little boys to play outside. There was absolutely no external influence that might have confused me or made me think that I was a girl. Yet, I have memories from when I was 3 or 4 years old, and knew for a fact that I was a girl, and that I wanted to be inside playing with dolls.

I definitely was taught what to think, because I grew up thinking the same way my parents did about life, religion, sin, etc. I was never taught to feel like a girl, but I knew I was a girl anyway.

SSG(P) (Join to see) According to the FBI, they work with many organizations. One such listed organization, under the public outreach section, is the Southern Poverty Law Center.

If the FBI works with them, I'm extremely sorry to burst any bubbles. The Southern Poverty Law Center is not the hate group. Just because all transphobic people want to continue to grasp and hold on to any one opinion, does not make it right or your's.

LTJG (Join to see) - Thanks for sharing your background. Mine is I have 4 sisters and no brothers so I grew up playing with dolls and dresses, just glad my parents didn't attempt any therapy with me, because I'm 100% straight. This is a permanent decision and if you make the wrong decision there is no fixing it. (my Son also has four sisters, and likes to play like a girl, working on some guy time with him) Individuals should be free to choose what they want to do with their bodies, but parents should not make permanent major life altering decisions. Transgendered kids can wait until adulthood to get the permanent treatments. Especially when post op regret has been studied to be between 2-20%.

Well considering the brain doesn't fully develop until age 25 or so...with that being said there may be some merit to their argument and aren't we all allowed to voice our opinion?

Exactly, SSG Steven Mangus! We may as well make the drinking and smoking ages open to anyone since school-aged children can make life altering decisions, according to the unhinged left.

Places that the Bible unequivocally doesn't belong: medicine.
Most of you know that I am a Christian and a transgender woman. This article gets thrown up here, usually by a right leaning Christian veteran, roughly once a quarter. And it's typically the same group of folks arguing in a faith based, and ironically uneducated way every time. You simply cannot make a medical or scientific argument based on scripture. Scripture can be argued to be a history book and there is validity there. But when doctors place faith over evidence based, peer reviewed, scientific research they are missing the mark.
The ACP has around 500 members (based on Wikipedia). Conversely the well accredited American academy of pediatrics has over 64000 members (aap website) and has repeatedly affirmed that the preferred method of treatment in adolescents with gender dysphoria is therapy, combined with gender affirmation and transition.
Their position is affirmed by the American medical association and the American psycological association.
Even Johns Hopkins, the home of Paul McHugh, the most widely quoted anti trans researcher, has reversed their position and distanced themselves from McHugh. They have reopened their gender clinic and affirmed the findings of the aap, ama, and others.
Research continues to point to a neurobiological source, likely in eutero and most first world countries have outlawed reparative therapy as dangerous.
I find the scripture to be useful for many things but if I am sick I seek a doctor. We tell people to follow their doctors orders but when thousands and thousands of doctors in America attempt to treat gender dysphoria we suddenly grab our Bibles and tell them we know better.

Cpl Joshua Caldwell - This sort of argument is thrown at us all the time. I almost don't entertain it anymore, but here goes again.
When a sperm makes contact with an egg the chromosomes start a chain reaction. Initially all fetuses have no sex characteristics at all. The X or Y causes the appropriate hormones to flow and the fetus begins to develop. We are all familiar with this narrative.
About 15 weeks later something called the androgen flush happens. During this time the fetus receives a flooding of hormones. It is during this time that it is believed inmate gender is "programmed" into us. In some cases fetal hormonal imbalances can occur. These imbalances are being studied. Emerging research suggests that this may have something to do with the development of non standard gender identities. Other research is finding that this may also be where autism spectrum disorders are formed. That would explain why both of these conditions are readily visible in people but cannot be seen in blood work or scans.
What I'm telling you is that trans people aren't crazy. We aren't confused. All of those suggest...A software issue. This is not software. It's not something we learned when we were 10. But it's not hardware. Our brains are physically the same as our cisgender peers. This is more like a bios issue. The basic understanding of who we are. I acknowledge that I was born with male primary sex characteristics. But I was also born with an identity that says female. There is no erasing that. That incongruence is what gender dysphoria is. And what we have learned is that it is easier to change my body to match my identity than to treat the multitude of anxieties, depressions and other issues that can happen from living a life where my body and my innate sense of gender don't match.
This doesn't make me crazy. I don't believe that I was born with a female body.
I hope this helps you to understand a little better.

SSG Patricia King ok following this line of reason, wouldnt it then make a lot more sense to reinforce your biological gender with therapy and hormones? Also, is there anyway to prove or disprove the "androgen flush" has or has not happened? And how do you diferentiate between flush people and people who are crazy The problem wiht crazy people is that they have no ability to realize that they are crazy. My example is a guy a once arrested who was 100% convinced that he was a cat, he spent hours trying to convince me that he really was a cat.

Cpl Joshua Caldwell - The problem with your suggestion is that trans people have the biological hormones that match their sex assigned at birth. There is no hormone deficiency. Cross section hormones are provided to help the body change to align with their gender. Not to help them feel female. Having said that, many trans people state that with cross sex hormones they feel more "normal". At this point this is purely anecdotal.
How do we differentiate those who are trans from those who are "pretending to be trans"? I believe that was your other question. My response is why would we assume that anyone with gender dysphoria is crazy? One of the first steps in the transition process is therapy. A therapist diagnoses gender dysphoria and helps the patient to determine if they want to transition. Their is no process to figure out the cause of the dysphoria. Only to determine that a patient has dysphoria and to determine if transition will help the patient. We don't question the legitimacy of a persons condition.
Believe me; if someone would like to fake being trans and is wiling to go through the alienation, pain from hormone therapy, pain of multiple surgeries and recoveries, pain of hair removal, loss of family and friends...Well that's a lot of dedication because none of us would wish this on someone.

SSG Patricia King I cant imagine anyone faking being trans gender, with the possible exception of boys who want to compete in sports against the girls.
I am trying to understand where you are coming from, I really am.
The root of my question is how do you differentiate between mental illness and people who have an actual medical issue (as best as I can frame it) My biggest problem is that I understand that manual that psychologists use to diagnose people, it is very subjective. I've dated 3 psyche PHD's and helped to launch the business of a 3rd who consults with medical doctors when they are under too much stress. There is a lot more art that science in any sort of diagnosis. You can quite literally diagnose every person you meet with some sort of condition from that manual. Framed in what looks to me like a grey fog of impossible verification of a non mental health related issue, wouldn't it be a lot better for the person involved to try to move them back towards their biological gender? As I see it, biological gender is the only thing that can be concretely verified.
To make my example slightly ridiculous, I can feel like a platypus all that I want, someone can even talk to me to confirm that I have always felt like a platypus, and even tag a name to what I feel, but my contention is that it having a name for what I think, combined with a theory for why I think that, still doesnt make me any closer to being a platypus, and it would be much better for me to go gestalt and have someone yelling at me all day that I am not in fact anything other than a human.
