Well, I made it through pilot training. I'm not cool now and wasn't then. I was a political science major with a 2.5 GPA, a wife and 2 kids, but I was smart enough, dedicated enough, and coordinated enough (barely) to get though pilot training. I wasn't smart, coordinated, or dedicated enough to be a fighter pilot. Only 2 fighter slots and 2 forward air controller slots came to my class of 88 pilots. Everybody else went to tankers, bombers, transports, or Pilot Training Instructors. We did have some extraordinary people in our pilot training class. A couple of prior service officers, one was a Navigator with a tour in Viet Nam in F-4s (back seat). We also had some college football heroes; one was married to a former Ms Utah. And we had two Marines (Navy pilot training couldn't meet the demand in 1970 so the AF trained some Marines). Mostly we had ordinary guys from land-grant colleges and universities across the US. I think at least 75% of the class was there to avoid the draft. Most were happy to get a tanker or transport because they believed it would set them up to apply to the airlines in 4 years.
