That was an interesting post, brother. And yes, we are divided from the British in the use of our common language, for sure. I remember in 2004 when we hung out for a week with the British Royal Marine Band at the military tattoo in Norfolk. The slang words they used were bizarre to us, and their pronunciation of well-known words as well. When I tried talking to them about the Canterbury Tales, some of them spent about 5 minutes trying to get me to pronounce Canterbury the way they did (when I first said it, they didn't even know what I meant). I remember one guy from a northern region of England, maybe Northumberland but I can't remember for sure, who spoke so quickly and with such an accent that I never understood what he was trying to tell me, not once. No matter how many times I asked him to repeat it.
