I heard about this on NPR this morning. I think it's great that the WC will have more countries involved, and more games to watch. They also said that this could increase the USA's chances of getting the tournament soon, considering that a larger field requires even more venues.

Here's the contrarian perspective.

World Cup expansion is a horrible decision
FIFA's expansion to a 48-team World Cup will be seen as the ruining of soccer's showcase event.

I agree with all the "Con's." Three teams per group? No. Thank. You. Quality of play will go down for sure. I generally agree the qualifiers will become more of a joke in the same way that so many NBA teams make the playoffs that the end of the regular season is a joke. BUT as USMNT supporter and American I'd 1) like to see the WC here again in my lifetime; 2) approve of anything that gives the US a better chance of going deeper in the tournament; and 3) like the opportunity of being able to watch more soccer (as a nation, just just me). Right now the only soccer that many Americans watch and get into is the WC. I think this is a shame and so culturally, the more soccer we can expose ourselves to, especially since it's so important to everyone else in the world, the better.

SSG Carlos Madden - I've been watching the BPL and the Bundesliga on a regular basis. If I were willing to spend a little more, I could also get the Italian and Spanish premier leagues. I also know of websites where you can watch matches in real-time on the web for free. Americans have no excuse these days. High-quality soccer is readily available. We just need to get people to start paying attention.
