Black women's hair is super hard to take care of and it takes a ton more time to get ready each day. Now let's put that soldier in combat where she needs to be effective and look like a professional. Are we going hold her to a standard that was never written to for black females or even took them into consideration when making those regs?. Dreads are easier to take care of and that soldier is able to be more effective in her job than having to worry about her hair all the time. Just because it is the way we used to do it, doesn't mean there is not a better way.

Well thought out SGT.
All this time, I thought the argument was a cosmetic issue.
Thanks for enlightening me.

SSG James J. Palmer IV aka "JP4" One of the things I loved about my time in the military was being immersed with people that I would have never had the pleasure of working and living with had I not been in the military. My understanding came from one super squared away SSG that during down time we got to talking about female hair regs. In order for her to have a off duty hairstyle and still remain in regs she had to spend tons of money on getting her hair straitened regularly. She told me that about once year she would have to stop getting it straitened for a month or so because her hair would actually start falling out from all the chemicals used. Instead of whining, she soldiered on like the great NCO she was. It is long overdue that the Army has finally recognized that this was an issue.

I had a lot of problems with hair regulations when I was in. Women don't typically shave their necks like guys do and that really got our CmSgt Major in a twist. He whipped out a razor and wanted to shave my neck, right there! My hair was within regs and up but I had hair on my neck that was attached to the hair that was put up. BTW I really do think hair regs need to change especially for my sisters who have more delicate hair needs than I do. I feel their frustration.
