Thanks for drawing attention to Adopt A US Soldier (AAUSS) COL Mikel J. Burroughs which has helped thousands of soldiers find friendship, support, and a much loved and needed touch of home.
I decided to do some basic research into AAUSS before I posted my repose. It seem to be a great organization. Thanks to Lynda Key for sharing it with you.
I have linked to a blog of somebody who went to the site in 2013 who was very leased with the service and established contact with a soldier.

I don't know if this will work Col. Burroughs. I just tried getting through to our President Elect to see if he would adopt me and they hung up on me? No reason given at all, just a complete failure to communicate I guess. I should have been more diplomatic maybe. I like your idea though. We tried to do this when our local troops were overseas. I was a Cub and Boy Scout leader and the Armed Services Committee feared that the wrong persons could get involved and cause harm to our soldiers by mailing them Ricin or other things that can do them harm. So the plan was scrapped back then. Once I got mailing labels for my unit members this all changed and the cookie/magazine/cd's /dvd's were sent on a regular basis. I think your idea to just send a card or letter and be supportive of the veterans is a great one. Sometimes challenge coins get traded and what a memento for a family or individual who chooses to do this.

All kidding aside I think this is an excellent program. Sometimes men and women enlist because their time in the military, their friends and the soldiers, sailors and airmen and women they work with are the only family they have. I would be happy to adopt a veterans serving our country and keep in contact with them and trade letters, cards some skype time etc so they know they have somebody out there who cares
