According to attorneys I have spoken with (I am a CCW Instructor in VA) it could easily cost $30,000-$50,000 to defend yourself in criminal court and that much again if you are sued in civil court over a self defense shooting. I don't have specific self defense insurance, but I do have an Umbrella Liability policy that covers me if I am sued in civil court.

Interesting. I do own a couple of guns but am not too worried about shooting anyone. One I don't have ammo for and the other is an antique that I'd question the wisdom of trying to use. I'm not too worried about crime, I live in a town that doesn't even have a police department (if I need police I have to call the state police). So actually using one obviously isn't a big concern for me.
Having said that if I had firearms and thought there was a more than minuscule chance of using it in self defense, I regularly went hunting or to the range, I'd definitely consider insurance. Even with safe handling unforeseen things can happen.
