The title of the Military Times Editorial "America can't afford to silence retired generals" contradicts Retired Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs position where he wisely states they “have an obligation to uphold apolitical traditions.” Their taking a public political position, he argues, makes it difficult for their successors in uniform who must be focused without fear or favor on national security SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL
Personally I concur with Gen. Martin Dempsey on this issue.

"Dempsey said that as generals, they “have an obligation to uphold apolitical traditions.”
Serving generals vs retired generals. Retired Generals are just that. Retired. Entitled to opinions.

Thanks for weighing in a year after I replied SFC Michael Hasbun.
My old friend General Vincent Brooks just retired and another four-star friend retired from leading TRADOC this past summer. Two of my old friends - General Joe Votel [CENTCOM] and General Tony Thomas [SOCOM] are still on active duty.
Most of the many three and four star retired generals I know as well as the one and two star generals who have retired are wise enough not to make their opinions on current policies and situations known.

I concur RallyPoint feed is not what I expected SFC Michael Hasbun. I expected it to be sorted from newest to oldest. I see something interesting and learn I responded to it months ago - sometimes after I already started to respond :-)

Why is General Dempsey speaking out if Generals aren't supposed to speak out?
