U.S. to spend $240M on upgrades to Navy base at Guantanamo

MIAMI — The U.S. Navy says it will spend $240 million to construct new buildings and repair existing ones at its base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
A contracting announcement published Wednesday says up to five companies will be selected to do work that will take place over the next five years. It does not include upgrades to the detention center.
Navy spokeswoman Susan Brink says details about the projects will be made available later.
The Navy also announced that Munilla Construction Management LLC of Miami has been awarded a $63 million contract to build a new school for children of military and civilian personnel at Guantanamo.
Cuba has long sought the return of the base, but the U.S. says it has no plans to give up its oldest overseas Navy installation.

First we should tell Cuba we would consider returning Guantanamo Bay naval base to Cuba after Russia returns Kaliningrad to Poland - Kaliningrad is Russia's strategic Baltic see base between Poland and Lithuania SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL.
I am glad that the Navy is investing in the infrastructure of the base. People forget that it a functioning base in the Caribbean and that their are dependent families who are OCONUS because they can't just go off-post to get what they need.

SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL They must have a long term plan to use the base as some sort of leverage to pry a concession or two out of Castro/Cuba at some point. Surely the base no longer has any strategic or tactical use to anyone, other than a thorn in the side of Cuba. If the US left Subic and Clark we can certainly do without GITMO. - although it was a nice place to be stationed.

That airstrip is pretty strategically located as well as any ship support infrastructure, limited as it may be.
