Of course they knew. It was a set up to bring America in on Israel's side. The Israeli planes were the same type Egypt used at the time. They had no markings, to complete the ruse. The "rescue/retaliatory" strike that was readied/launched/recalled from USS Saratoga and USS America had nuke bombers on the cats that were Egypt bound.

Russia told Johnson under the table that any American move against Egypt would bring Russia in on Syria's side and Egypt's side. In an amazing bitch slap to the cocky 'merica - Britain and France then told Johnson - also under the table - that any move towards Egypt would bring **THEM ** in on Egypts' side. Ooops.

PO3 Donald Murphy Thanks for the behind the curtain view. Amazing how those "non spoken" words are understood.

I was reading a book (the title escapes me at the moment) about how France sold Israel missile boats and then after accepting payment, renegged on the deal. The Israeli's sent "tourists" to France who turned out to be sailors and they stole the boats from France. At that point, France cut Israel off completely from an arms point of view. A year earlier, they had pulled the same thing with the Mirage. So from a strategic point of view, Israel needed an arms seller. Russia was using Syria and Egypt to test their gear and Britain provided some Centurion battle tanks to Israel. The Brits were over the moon with the Centurion's performance reports with Israel even allowing British "observers" on the front lines. America wanted in on that market but had no relationship with Israel.

During Israel's emergency time of need (1948 war of independence) America sold some B-17 bombers to a "Jewish buyer" and then deliberately broke the bombers so they could not be used as warplanes. The Jewish American League grabbed congress by the testicles and soon, a trickle of munitions were headed East with a large percentage of duds. Israel then made one of those threats to America that never really kinda go away, if you know what I mean. Israel never forgot and refused to buy American. Up until 1967, most of their weaponry was either French, British, home made (Uzi) or WW2 surplus. Salamander's "An Illustrated Guide To The Israeli Airforce" goes in to a lot of this as well.

The 'Liberty' is another sad day in American military history. The true story of why our failure to engage would be an interesting read, if it is ever de-classified.

In the fact Israel knew it was a USN ship, we should have blasted them back for this unprovoked attack. And they came back and back again. Only makes one shake their head in disbelief.

And again......you/we/they are only being told .00002% of what really happened. It was a set up to bring America in to the war on Israel's side. The planes used had no markings and were the same type Egypt used. Now - where dumerica messed up, is they should have pulled the ship in, got everyone off, told the sailors a piggy-back crew was gonna ride the ship for some "tests" and then send it off on remote control. Happens all the time.

When you don't tell the crew what you're doing and theres a fire, they kinda - duh - wanna put the fire out! Johnson wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. This is what amazed the Israeli's. "What? You dumbasses sent a fully manned ship?"
