I originally went through in '87. We had testing on everything we were taught and we were all to scared not to pass. The only down time we ever had was Sundays, and that was barracks maintenance, marching to make a 15 minute phone call (as long as we didn't screw that up) and hoping to find time to send a letter home. I don't think more time needs to be added, just less time to worry about Soldiers feelings.

SSG Derrick L. Lewis MBA, C-HRM I like the idea of 'phase' testing. Do it right or do it again!

CSM Charles Hayden ,
Absolutely! Do away with the assembly line mentality and ensure that the Soldiers coming through are actually learning and grasping the concept.

Sergeant Major, when I went through Basic Training in the summer of 2014. You had to do basic warrior tasks or whatever else you've learned during that phase to go from red to white and white to blue phase. I don't remember if anyone was recycled for failing the tasks.

I like the idea of testing common Soldier tasks. The quality of training and time management would affect the need for a longer BCT, I think.

SSG Derrick L. Lewis MBA, C-HRM - I agree. And I don't recall having too much downtime to study anything on my own while I was in BCT, excluding bed time, but less sleep means worse performance, memory, etc.

You and me both. BCT allotted me very little white space, if any at all.

SSG Derrick L. Lewis MBA, C-HRM - If they want to "educate", they have to address the basics - rest, studying, and mentorship.
