The first couple of times our children watched Mr Rogers I thought it was insipid. Then, as I thought about it, I got the message. He was delivering a very important message to children: You're great just the way you are. I grew up with a father who taught my brother and I that we were always broken somehow. His favorite piece of "wisdom" was that children should always act one year older than they actually are. (Don't ask me. I haven't a clue) After my mother died while I was in the Army, he married a woman with teen aged children. When I visited him, he happened to tell them the same thing. I followed up with, "Don't ask me. I never understood it either."
