Did you know a little over 50 years ago this song became # 1 on the Hot 100 chart for 5 weeks. He performed on the Ed Sullivan show. Very few songs from that era cast a positive light on the military. This one did !

Had the album growing up. I liked to sing Garet Trooper (I loved the part about the five knifes he had) while working in the shop. My Dad thought is was funny.

The first time I heard this song, I was watching the movie "More American Graffiti" with my father in the movie theater. Dad and I had "sneaked" out of the house to watch it. At the time, I was seven years-old and was surprised at my father's reaction to it. I learned about his military service and his lost friends. It also started the first of many life lessons that he taught me.
