COL Mikel J. Burroughs If we hadn't strayed from the initial mission in 2003 by siphoning off trips to go to Iraq, we could have finished off the Taliban post haste.
When President Bush deposed Saddam, that opened the door for Iran to fill the vacuum. "Power abhors a vacuum" Saddam approve of him or not was the balance against Iran. Maliki is a Shia who allowed Iran to come in.
It is interesting to note that Iran offered to provide assistance against the Taliban and Bush turned them down.
As far as the need for more troops, what commander did you ever know that was satisfied with his resources to complete a task/ mission? I've never known one!

COL Mikel J. Burroughs By deliberately relinquishing American influence in Afghanistan (the Middle East), POTUS has allowed others to fill the vacuum. Notably, Iran. Wherever a vacuum is left it will be filled, especially in a land of tribes and sectarianism.

CPT (Join to see) We are seeing a Shia-Sunni civil war, nothing else. The Shia backed by the Persians are dominating Syria (Assad a Shia) Iraq (Maliki isShia) Hamas Shia and so on. Daesh is Sunni. It's like Europe after the Reformation except with heavier weapons!
