To be honest, if Trump wins the GOP nomination I will vote for ONLY because the Democratic alternative really is worse (yes, worse, as hard as that is to imagine). I'm praying that someone, almost anyone other than Trump wins and that Trump does not mount a third party run. If he does, he will be assuring a Democratic win (a la Perot and Nader). If you think about it, they may have been his intent all along...

The GOP needs to understand that they are there to reflect the ideals, and standards, of the Republican Party as a whole, not their own individual egos! The Democrat Party lost that understanding a number of years ago.

Unfortunately for the Republican Party the chickens may be coming home to roost. They have been allowing the outliers to have way too much sway over the party for the last several years and now Trump is singing the music that many of those people want to hear. Much of what he is saying is exactly what many of my hard core conservative friends have been saying behind closed doors for years, Trump is just shinning the national spotlight on it. He has absorbed all of the oxygen out of the room, virtually aphixiating the mainstream politicians aka Jeb Bush. Cruz seems to be the only other one currently with his head above water, but there is no coincidence his views on many subjects are just one slim shade to the center of Trump. Cruz is hoping that if and when Trump bails he will be able to pick up the pieces. You make your bed and then you lay in it.

Actually, the GOP hasn't been true to its own principles and the outliers are the result. The base is rallying behind them because they have discovered that the GOP establishment is almost as progressive as the Democrats. I've attended a few Republican Central Committee meetings in my county and was dismayed to see the "party leadership" rallying behind Boehner when he was on his most egregious behavior.

Barry Goldwater would be considered a liberal by today's standards and Reagan would be on the fringe. There are two distinct parts to the Republican Party, those moderates that are more to the center and those of the hard right. While all Democrats are to the left the division party is not splintered between the left and the hard left within the party. I would argue that what is considered RHINO is in fact actually the mainstream Republican Party. You cannot gauge the national strength of a party based on party gerrymandered districts or statewide elections. Many people have blamed losing the last two presidential campaigns on the candidates not being conservative enough. If the current trends plays out in the primary and either Donald Trump, whom I do not consider a true conservative but did own a Holiday Inn Express once or Ted Cruz wins, we will finally get to see the true measure of conservative support in this country.
