1LT (Join to see) you as a Transportation Officer , I'd say the he most unique job would be as a Watercraft Platoon Leader in 7th Sustainment. Causeways, lighterage, Tugs, Logistics Support Vessels. Unique theater opening mission. Logistics Over the Shore.

There used to be a Captain slot at the Navy's amphibious school in Coronado teaching embarkation

There is a port battalion that's part of US Transcom.

The composite truck companies now give you exposure to light, medium, and HET. Before you had to get to a LT/MED Co, PLS Co, Medium POL, S&T Troop, Div Trans Co, or a HET Co to get the experience.

Cross train into Supply and Ordnance (maintenance and Ammo). When you promote to O-3, all three branches (92A, 88A, 91A) merge into Logistics Branch. Your Command opportunities will be Multifunctional Logistics Commands

MAJ (Join to see) - that will happen, especially if you are in an FSC. If it doesn't, that's why the CCC is made the way it is. They definitely will be as they become SpOs or Captains in a SPO or primary staff like S4/G4. The LTs question was looking at interesting/unique branch opportunities. Certainly that would be requisite broadening probably as he approaches Captain.

I hear the multifunctional thing, I was FA90 before it transitioned to LG. I was LG as a Major having had multifunctional experiences as a SPO, XO, S&S Officer, had. Trans coded slot as a LT. And the Battalion Command slating went 100% down functional lines. I was the GC of an Arsenal. Trans guys went To trans Bns and QM guys went to QM Bns. It's not translating as near as I can tell. My colleagues who went on to BDE level commands seem to have gone down functional lines. LG preaches the multifunctional thing, but it's like telling your kid that he can be president. He could be, but most likely won't.

LTC Jason Mackay I think everyone’s experience is going to be unique. I was a 92A 2LT, ended up being shuffled into a Terminal Battalion (11th Trans. Fort Story, VA, deployed as an 88A PL in a Cargo Transfer Company to Kuwait in 03. Best cross training ever. I think 2007 was the first year for the Combined Logistics Captain’s Career Course (CLC3) to graduate LG branch Captains. My company commands have been FSCs, staff time in SPO AND XO in. Motor Trans Battalion. Love what I’m doing and looking forward to the next opportunity.

MAJ (Join to see) - your experience is not the norm. LTs not really being slated that way in divisions. They were being slated that way in Sustainment Brigades. I'm glad someone got to break the mold though. The intent of LG was to grow a basic branch qualified officer with solid foundation in that branch, then have them concentrate on broadening inside Sustainment. If that takes 18-24 months, great. If situations call for the LT to learn other skills and knowledge, then you do the best you can and be the best what ever the Army wants you to be.
