About
This is a research study conducted by the University of Southern California.
This study is recruiting new participants during May 2022. There will be an additional opportunity to participate in a similar study later this summer. If you sign up now and are eligible, but do not make it into the May 2022 study, we will contact you later this summer by email to gauge your interest in the larger study.
The purpose of this study is to examine how mobile apps that focus on mindfulness techniques and stress reduction skills can help post-9/11 veterans. Several stand-alone apps for phones have been developed, but they have yet to be tested to see if they are helpful for veterans who may living with stress or may be drinking alcohol at levels higher than they would like.
To be included for this study, you need to be:
- (a) A veteran aged 18 or older who has separated or discharged from military service from the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, or Navy
- (b) Not currently affiliated with active duty service or in the reserves or guard units
- (c) Served after 9/11/01
- (d) Able to read English
- (e) Own a personal smartphone with Internet access and have interest in using apps on that phone
- (f) Fill out a few items on this screening survey asking about your alcohol use, experiences with symptoms of stress, and about your use of any treatment for substance use or mental health concerns

Details about the study
We are asking about 20 other veterans to participate. Below is a link to a screening survey to see if you are eligible.
If you are eligible and get enrolled in the study, you will have the opportunity to complete all portions of the study. You can receive up to $70 in gift cards of your choosing (e.g., Amazon, restaurants, digital media), if you complete the study.
If you are eligible, we will contact you and ask if you are interested in joining the study. If so, we will ask you to:
- Download an app onto your phone and complete eight modules contained in the app. The app focuses on practicing mindfulness and engaging in stress-reduction exercises
- Complete two online surveys: one before downloading the app and one after completing all of the app modules. You will receive a $20 gift card for completing each of these surveys.
- After completion of the modules, you will be asked to participate in a brief 30 minute interview with a member of our research staff about your experience with the mobile app. You will receive a $30 gift for completing this interview.
If you do not meet eligibility requirements but know someone who does, you can forward them a link to the screening survey if you choose to.
