Ok so I reenlisted for alaska. Overseas assignment was denied by efmp in Alaska. Was told I get choice of conus station if I renegotiate my contract or go needs of the army. Obviously choice is limited to availability for rank mos etc. I Requested ft knox and ft leonard wood. Both were denied by hrc and they countered with ft sill, ft Riley, ft drum, or ft Irwin. At a loss. None of these are what I'm looking for but I realize I don't have much options. Anyone have positive/negative feedback about the posts, area, work life balance? I have 4 kids and value my off time with my family. Ive been at ft carson, ft campbell and ft bliss and hate bliss and the surrounding area for context. Any input is appreciated!

I'm at Sill right now, and fixing to leave soon. The post itself isn't the worst place you can end up; unless of course you and your family don't like heat. While it'll stay winter in Alaska for most of the year here in Oklahoma it stays in the hundreds from basically late April through early November. It would make all the sense in the world if this was desert country, but it isn't.

I've wanted to go to Drum for awhile and based on what my wife researched it's a solid place to go for family stuff.

If you do end up in Sill let me know and I'll point out all the hidden gems out here.

I was at Ft. Riley for 4 years. Before I hit my 4 year mark I was a month away from returning from my second deployment at Ft. Riley. The assignments they've offered you are Division assignments, not sure what your MOS is but you'll spend a lot of time away. I was a 25B at Ft. Riley and spent most of my time in the field, NTC, deployment and repeat.

I was @ Fort Sill twice. First time as a 12B Combat Engineer and single... I have no help from that perspective. 2nd time as a 31B Military Police, married with two children. My two cents, the schools were great, Lived in Comanche county outside the back gate, and my kids went to great schools. My wife was a very active participant in the family support groups, and also thought it was a decent place. For typical shopping, not bad. We took trips to OK City for holiday shopping, and headed South to Texas numerous times for shopping. Bottom line, every place you go - outside of Bliss - it is what you make of it!
