I was not in country but I served in the Era. After becoming disabled on active duty on an onsite Special Purpose garage. I was honorably discharged from the US AirForce stationed at that time a SAC base in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Civilians couldn’t stand me that I served in the military during that terrible time. I can only imagine the trauma and disbelief that in country Veterans faced when they came home, to what! Disgrace, humiliation not to mention the total disrespect they faced. These were American civilians that knew nothing about what in country Veterans live day in and day out with. My cousin, who’s not with us any longer was in Vietnam and he told the constant fear he lived with. Most Vietnam Veterans and Vietnam Era Veterans are in their late seventies or eighties. But we all remember the cruelty and disgust that American citizens had for all Veterans at that time. Everyone has suffered enough. I still say God Bless our Veterans and God Bless the US of A…

I did my tour in Vietnam from October 1966 to June 1967 with the 4th Infantry Division, got a early out to train troops at Ft.Polk for the remainder of my enlistment, didn’t face much trouble from civilians on my return, just a sense of apathy and embarrassment towards veterans,I in turn returned those sentiments with inner anger and dissociation for my civilian peers, this leads to my distrust of those that did not serve,I found a Bother hood all those years ago,one I have never forgotten, Welcome Home Brothers.

I was in-country 1969-1970. When I first arrived, a Gunnery Sergeant gave us advice on staying alive. Two things he said that I remember were to forget about home for the next year and to not make close friends. After leaving Vietnam, I was in Okinawa to get squared away before returning to the states. A Marine that arrived in Okinawa after me, informed me that my best friend had been killed the morning after I left Vietnam. I was in shock, and returning to the states did not help. My anguish/anger does not compare to the sacrifice paid by my best friend.
