MEDICAL/HEALTH CARE COVERAGE WHILE IN THE USAR:
One of the most significant benefits of continuing service in the U.S. Army Reserve is the medical and health care coverage available to its members. U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers have access to similar medical and dental care as their active-duty counterpart, including medical exams, immunizations, and mental health services. This is particularly important for Veterans who may have service-related injuries or disabilities that require on-going care.
Serving in the U.S. Army Reserve can be an excellent opportunity for Veterans who want to continue their service to their country while also pursuing other career or personal goals. One of the most significant benefits of serving in the U.S. Army Reserve is the medical and health care coverage available to its members. In this blog post, we'll explore the health care benefits available to U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers and how they can help Veterans and their families stay healthy and well.
COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE FOR ARMY RESERVE SOLDIERS……
U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers have access to comprehensive medical and dental care through the TRICARE health care program. TRICARE provides health care coverage for military members, retirees, and their families for a low-cost monthly premium. An annual deductible and co-pays may also apply depending on the coverage plan. The program is designed to provide access to high-quality health care services for all beneficiaries, regardless of their location.
TRICARE coverage for U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers includes the following benefits:
1. Primary Care: Soldiers have access to primary care services through a network of military treatment facilities and civilian providers (TRICARE Reserve Select will differ). Primary care services include routine check-ups, preventative care, and treatment for acute illnesses or injuries.
2. Specialized Care: Soldiers who require specialized medical care can access a variety of services through TRICARE. This can include everything from mental health services to surgical procedures.
3. Prescription Drug Coverage: Soldiers can access prescription drug coverage through TRICARE. This coverage includes both generic and brand-name medications, as well as certain over-the-counter drugs.
4. Dental Care: Soldiers have access to comprehensive dental care through the TRICARE Dental Program. This program provides coverage for routine dental services, as well as more extensive procedures like orthodontics and oral surgery.
5. Vision Care: Soldiers can access vision care services through the TRICARE Vision Program. This program provides coverage for routine eye exams, glasses, and contact lenses.
In addition to the benefits listed above, U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers also have access to mental health services through TRICARE. This can include counseling and therapy services for a wide range of mental health conditions, including PTSD, depression, and anxiety.
….AND THEIR FAMILIES!
U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers also have the option to enroll their family members in the TRICARE health care program. This can provide valuable health care coverage for spouses and children, regardless of where they live. TRICARE coverage for families includes the same benefits listed above, including primary care, specialized care, prescription drug coverage, dental care, and vision care.
The TRICARE program also provides certain benefits specifically for families of U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers. For example, the program offers special services for families who are dealing with a deployment or other extended absence. This can include counseling services, support groups, and other resources to help families stay connected and cope with the challenges of military life.
In addition to TRICARE, select U.S. Army Reserve families may also be eligible for other health care benefits, such as the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA). CHAMPVA provides health care coverage for spouses and dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died as a result of their service.
CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, the medical and health care coverage available to all U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers is a valuable benefit that can help Veterans and their families stay healthy and well. With access to comprehensive health care services through TRICARE, U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers can receive the care they need to maintain their physical and mental readiness. Additionally, family members of Soldiers can also access TRICARE and other health care benefits to ensure that their health care needs are met.

This applies to all Reserve component servicemembers. The only restrictions are that you must be in a drilling status (so individuals in the ING, IRR, Navy VTUs, etc aren't eligible) and aren't eligible for, or enrolled in, the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) program*.
Unless you have some platinum-plated insurance plan paid by your employer, you'll likely not get a better insurance program as a reserve component servicemember than belonging to TRS for two simple reasons:
• The monthly premiums ($239.69/month for a family) are lower than most employer sponsored plans.
• There is a catastrophic cap of $1,217 annually (which is lower than a lot of other plan deductibles thresholds!)
