What does this even mean?
For Woody, this sentiment gained its true meaning prior to him joining the Marines. It began when he was a taxi driver delivering Western Union telegrams from the US War Department to the families, expressing condolences that their loved one had sacrificed their life for this great nation. Those memories have permeated with him until this day.
After returning from the war, Woody worked many years at the VA, supporting and assisting veterans in need. Upon his retirement from the VA, he found a new venture that would continue his passion of serving those who have lost so much for this country… our nations Gold Star Families!
A little over ten years ago, Woody had a vision of honoring the families that had loved ones that never made it home. He made it very clear that the families should also never be forgotten, for they too have sacrificed so much for this country. This is when Woody took his passion and lifelong goal and formed it into a non-profit organization, “Woody Williams Foundation” (WWF). The sole mission is to honor, recognize and serve Gold Star Families and the legacy of their Loved Ones who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Woody has always embodied his passion for our nation’s Gold Star Families and he will continue to express his thoughts about what the Medal of Honor stands for and why he wears it. In his own words, “It’s for them, not me. The Cause Is Greater Than I”. Woody’s Foundation is now represented in all 50 states and 1 US territory having honored, recognize and served over 10,000 Gold Star Families and counting.
This takes me back to my original article “Find your Cause”. At 97 years young, Woody is a prime example of having found that cause and living it every single minute of his life!
