In the U.S Coast Guard's over 200-year-old history, only one of its members has ever been awarded the Medal of Honor. Signalman First Class Douglas Munro earned the decoration posthumously in September 1942 at Guadalcanal, one of the most arduous and dangerous campaigns in the Pacific Theatre during World War 2.
