Your thoughts on immigration? Mine are plain and very simple!

In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he/she shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such person because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American and nothing but an American. … There can be no divided allegiance here. Any person who says he/she is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. … We have room for but one language here and that is the English language … and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the Constitution of the United States and the American people.

Does that mean Ted Crus (my key for the last letter of the alphabet is broken), Nicole Kidman, Craig Ferguson, Lis Taylor, Salma Hayek, Hugh Jackman, Anthony Hopkins, Mick Jagger and many many more should renounce their other countries?
I don't even get the statement that 'We have room for but one language here and that is the English language' there are many successful people here that are bilingual. Italian, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese...the list goes on and on. Hell, if we take this logic all the way back, us Americans should be speaking the language of the first peoples that settled here. But which one..the algic family of the northeast (Mahican, Deleware, Illinois tribes, for example) or perhaps Siouan Family of the planes (Kansas, Omaha, Crow tribes) There were over 100 language variants spoken on this land by Native Americans.

What about the illegal who came over with parents when he or she was 2 years old, could not get into the school system and only knows conversational street English and stuff picked up from TV? They are not refusing to learn; they are not given a fair shake.

The 2 year old in your example is not our problem, blame his/her parents for breaking the law. Matter of fact, I think it is total BS that if you sneak into the country, have a baby, that baby is American. That baby is whatever his parents are.
My Great Grandparents immigrated from Ireland and had to renounce their citizenship to Ireland. I think that if you immigrate to the U.S., legally, then you understand that we are primarily English speaking nation and that you need to be able to communicate in that language.
Currently the problem we are facing is because we have decided what laws can or won't be enforced.

I'm not talking about a baby born here. I was referring to a baby brought here with their illegal parents, or more commonly, sent here "to live a better life" with distant family members or complete strangers. A practice that is more and more prevalent.
I can think of many communities in the US where the older, and often original, inhabitants don't speak hardly any English. Many older Italian communities in the Eastern US for example. There is a fairy large Russian community in the Portland Oregon area; several of them do not speak English beyond very basic words. These kinds of places exist throughout the country.

I have no problem with immigration... I do, however, have an issue with the enforcement of our current immigration laws, especially since it allows for both "Legal" and "Illegal" to receive the same benefits whether they are trying to become citizens or not... I don't have an issue with children of illegals who were born here and have been through and have graduated our school system K-12. I do, however, think that these children should be required to take the citizenship exam at HS graduation and/or before acceptance to any American College. Failure would not get them deported, but would make them legal aliens who are eligible for re-test, or employment if they did not wish to further their education. Any children they have would be considered American (Given my history, we have to draw a line somewhere). I also think that legal (not born here, nor graduated HS here) aliens be given a time frame to become American Citizens upon being accepted here, even if that exam has to be done in their native language, or be deported. At some point, we should hold the individual responsible especially since "we" are paying for it, and lines do have to be drawn in the sand letting them know they can either stand on this side of it, or board the boat back. I know there are many ideas on how to handle this, and mine is just one in billions, but at least its a fair opinion! LOL!
