Would you support the efforts to protect the last male white rhino? Would you consider letting scientist to attempt to clone the white rhino or possible forced artificial insemination?

I think, at this point, with there being only one male left, they need to get its DNA in order to propagate the species. Armed guards may be able to ward off hunters, but they cannot stop time.

I done think it is right but I also don't think it is against natures rules. I believe that it speeds up the process of nature exponentially though.

I look at it this way: what are the natural predators that a rhino would have? A man w/ a rifle from the other side of the plain is not one of them. Especially when they're only going after their horn(s). Fortunately for this guy, it appears that he has no fear of someone coming after his horn as it appears to be gone.

It is probably too late to save the species, but maybe find a way to get this ones sperm and lab breed some more. This one deserves our respect and should be treated very well.

Every species on the planet, including our own, is in various stages of "extinction" as we speak.

All that came before us to all that will come after us.

The White Rhino is already extinct. Yes, that's a fatalistic view, but it's true. When there is just 1 male left, the species is effectively gone.

The human race is just one good sized meteor from the same fate.

This doesn't mean we shouldn't TRY to do something. We brought the Bald Eagle back. It's no longer Endangered (still Protected), but this is a case of vigilance.

We must be ever wary. There will always be the next species we cannot save. The last one we killed off, that will be gone forever... because it was it's time.

Like the Passenger Pigeon. For those not familiar with them, the roamed the skies in SWARMS... and man annihilated them, because they couldn't breed fast enough to keep up, even after we realized what was happening.

So, if we have the capability to "not #$%# where we live/eat" we should probably do that. You never know when we'll be the next white rhino.

PO3 Steven Sherrill I take no joy in it. I just see the battle as lost is all. It's just matter of how long we can hold on...

No, I didn't imagine that you did take any joy in it. I just think it is sad that such truly wonderful animals will be gone in my lifetime. Imagine explaining to your grand children what a rhinoceros is. It will be as far from reality for them as the dinosaurs. Making it worse is that it is our fault. It wasn't natural selection, evolution, or climate change. It was man's greed.

PO3 Steven Sherrill I know you didn't. But I also know my tone often comes off as very blunt, and emotionless on RP. What may seem as a "matter of fact" or pragmatic approach is me dealing with cold reality, not a lack of emotion on the subject.

Your words highlight my feelings on the matter. Unfortunately, the question of whether we should do anything to "protect the species from extinction" has already been answered. I believe they are already "functionally" extinct, and have resigned myself to that.

With only one male white rhino left in the world, do you think our efforts are enough to protect the species from extinction?

Species go extinct every day. It's the way of things. The ecosystem will adapt. Perhaps not the way we'd like, and perhaps not in our favor, but the earth will go on...

Agreed. My point is, we saved it solely because of our emotional attachment to it. We wouldn’t have bothered otherwise. There are countless species dying out every day that we don’t care to save, many of which likely have far more medicinal or ecological value to our species. Emotional attachment is not enough reason to me to justify the expense.

IMO I think that we should do what we can to save it. Others will agree to help protect it against poachers but will not agree on science having a helping hand. I would just hope that if extinction is its fate that humans would help protect it until it died of natural causes.

SFC Michael Hasbun the problem here is that this species was killed off by man, it didn't die off due to natural predators or other causes. It was kiilled off by an invasive species.

We are still a naturally occurring species. Animals dying off due to the predation/actions of another species is just a facet of our existence. We can't keep separating our species from the other animals. We are just another species of animal. Nothing more or less. Right now we are the dominant one. For how long? Who knows... But we are still nothing more than another animal.

YES.....I'd Do Whatever I Could.....With One Species After Another Disappearing, OUR Number Would Eventually Be Called Up As "NEXT"; And, Folks, It's Not All That Far Away, Either.....
Turn Into Your "Nature" Channel.......Some Scary Crap Going On....
And REMEMBER... "It's Not Nice To Fool Mother Nature".......THAT Bitch'll Get-cha...

I am torn on this one...between not caring and wondering if there is a reason to care? If the animal is not interested in procreating on its own, is it even worth talking about?

Incapable is even worse. Do they make Viagra for rhinos? I think we may be on to something...of course not sure having a horny...get it :)...rhino running around is a good thing either.

Searching on-line for solutions to the rhino's 'problem' someone in China suggested rhino horn...ummm, never mind, terrible circle that this has already caused.
