Water buffalo and snake. Weirdest thing I drank was Thai Whiskey. The stuff gave me hallucinations. Rumor was it was laced with kerosene.

When I was there there was a Thai whiskey called as I remember "Running deer", legend has it had formaldehyde, same as Sihnghai Beer.

Singha (sp?) was good stuff. Someone claimed he saw an old woman (Mamasahn) put Thai whiskey in her gas generator.

Two things I guess. On the way to our Vietnam deployment and crossing the Pacific, we would sometimes end up with a flying Fish on deck that didn't make it. We would scalle it and filet ( such as much as yoy could filet one of those things ) and ate a piece raw. Wasn't bad. While on our deployment, they fed us goat ( they said Mutton ). Well that never happened again as it all ended up in the garbage. Nobody could eat it.

Monkey brains, thought I ordered shrimp? Did taste good but could tell when presented what I really ordered, just ordered more Jim Beam to go with.

In Korea, I went with a Katusa to their favorite hang out for dinner and had a spicy soup. Sounded and tasted good till they I found out it had fish stomach and who knows what else in it.

When in West Germany during Reforger 78, we ended up getting C rations for our meals, complete with Lucky Stripe and Camel filter less cigarettes in them. Not sure when they stopped making them with smokes, but we were pretty sure it was early Nam. Someone didn't rotate stock real well somewhere.

In Nakhon Phanom, Thailand it was whatever the street vendors were selling..they were called monkey balls, but who knows? While stationed in Germany my wife and I went to Romania to adopt our son; for the celebratory meal after the adoption was final we're fairly certain our interpreter served us a meatloaf type dish made from pig brains..a real delicacy in that part of the world.

Sgt William Straub Jr. - Actually my Germany assignment was to Wiesbaden Army Airfield, supporting V Corps. I had 3 Army support assignments and found a vast difference in attitudes and other things depending on whether you supported ground or aviation. My squadron commander at NKP was on the Son Tay raid...I'll never forget his commander's call brief of that whole process and lack of results.

It was sad being on the flight line when some of the birds returned. We weren't told what had happened and what the mission was, but you could tell by the body language and distraught faces on the crews that it wasn't successful. Sad day, but it wasn't just NKP involved. Many SEA bases and Army were involved. It was a couple of days later that the majority of us found out what was going on.

Sgt William Straub Jr. - To this day I'm still curious as to where the leak was...

It's a little fuzzy after 46 years, I was at the ECP next to the Fire Dept on the flight line. As I remember we normally had two Jolly Greens. On this day there were many more. Even the guys at the Fire station came over to me and commented on it. I had no idea why they were there at the time. The next day a rumor was going around that someone from Time magazine had tried to get on base due to something happening. I don't have any idea what let the cat out of the bag. Interesting though, the Air America C123 came in the day before the raid. I also have a vague memory of a C130 gunship out side of base op's. I was there a few years before you, so there may be some re-configuration to where facilities were. As I remember, the entry control point was to the right of the fire dept facing the taxi way, to the right of the ecp, was base ops and the terminal for the airport itself. I also remember the late King and the Queen coming to visit the base. We had to hide our weapons in our ECP's to, I guess placate Thai Security.
