I can honestly say I have never been in a bad unit. Every unit I began to hate was due to the leadership of the unit. I've had more than one unit I can say was my best unit and worst unit due to the change of leadership. <div><br></div><div>I do find it amazing that one Commander/1SG can make the unit great and another Commander/1SG can completely destroy the unit. </div>

If your unit's leadership is in the toilet. The units performance will be in the toilet.

When I joined my company it was returning from the field with 23 cases of cold in weather injury. The CO's orientation briefing was a litany of offenses that would result in our being sent to Correctional Confinement and he was actually proud of the number of soldiers he had sent there. The butter bar pretending to be our platoon leader said his nickname was "The Prosecutor" (it was actually Micky Mouse). Drug use was high and the AWOL rate was atrocious. The next CO turned all that around in less than six months. He knew that we were already watching out for each other. He just got behind it and made it his policy that we took care of our own. He channeled our anger toward achievement. I've already gone on too long but I could write pages more. I've never seen a better example of what leadership can do.

MAJ Rene De La Rosa - sometimes the wait was unbearable so I created my own opportunities to move, usually up.

Hear, Hear! The command team makes the unit. I served in one battalion where the commander was as nutty as a pecan tree. But the XO and Sergeant Major where the best I ever worked for. It wasn't the "best" unit I served in but despite the disadvantage of a poor commander this was offset by herculean efforts of the staff. It functioned and could do it's mission. BTW the CO was relieved for cause and it got better.

I agree, espirit de corps is like a book your trying to sell, the book could be amazing but if the reviews are bad no one will buy it, and that's how motivation dies

Yes sir agreed, had a stateside unit keep burning it's NCOs for everything, until they involved the IG heads rolled then leadership overseas duty was early 80s very good, stateside sucked

As a senior nco it is on us in coordination with our superiors to make or break a unit.

Totally a retiree or veteran question, to give a worst while on active duty is suicide, you may just be re-assigned......there again!

I'm grateful that social media wasnt as huge back when I was in compared to now.
Myspace was booming and facebook was on the rise when I got out.
