Recently I was talking with my wife (she’s Dutch) about the US having a lot of troops in Germany during the Cold War. She told as a teen a US soldier lived in her neighborhood and befriended her like a little sister. Her strongest memory was his Ford Mustang and going for car rides with him. My curiosity is piqued as I can’t find any information other than the current unit in the south of the Netherlands. Any old veterans remember any of this? She said he rarely talked about his work, other than seeing him in his uniform,so she wondered if it was classified.

There are NATO billets in the Netherlands. Believe we also had Pre-positioned Stock in the NLD.

From 1966 to 68 I was assigned to the 7232nd Munition maintenance Squadron, Det 10. It was a Classified assignment to support and provide security to the nuclear weapons unit. My Mos was Security Police Force. Those two years I spent there, we're the best years of my military service. We were based on a Dutch AF Base, named Volkel AF Base, outside the village of Uden. There was also a Fighter Wing , Amsterdam AF Base outside the city of Amsterdam.

Volkel AB is still there and they still have nuclear weapons, although no one is supposed to know that. :)
