What should be done about duplicate threads on same or similar discussions?

I have noticed lately that there have been a number of instances where several folks have started threads on the same or similar topics (I include myself in this list).
The RP engine offers similar topics, but often misses the ones that are identical.
So, when you make a post on a hot topic (e.g. when Col Williams and I both started threads on the Baltimore Police Commissioner being sacked), how do you check if someone else started one like it?
And for the RP staff, how strong is the RP AI engine? Is it able to find multiple thread that are similar? It seems it currently takes hand jamming to combine the threads, meanwhile we post to multiples, and sometimes miss sage comments...

One of the things I do as a 4 star admin is look for these duplicate threads. The "engine" you speak of is exactly this, people trusted by RallyPoint to help police the site and take the appropriate action when needed. Personally, I'm very careful before closing any posts because I don't want to be seen as the "thought police" but at the same time I'm trying to clean up the clutter that can sometimes choke RallyPoint.

SSgt (Join to see) - We can do that. When I close a thread, there is a check box that asks if I want to close the thread and move the comments to the other thread. We have to provide the URL of the other thread as well. Once we check that box and hit "OK" the one thread is closed and the comments moved to the original thread. The hardest thing sometimes is determining which thread to close. For me, I go by time stamp. If you start a thread at 13:01:23 and I start the same topic at 13:02:13, I close mine.

That's good information to know, we as a community need to also do a better job of policing our selves.

SSgt (Join to see) - I can tell you this, if you ever see a duplicate thread or anything else you feel needs to be looked at by the admin staff or admin users, feel free to tag one of us. Those of use with 4 stars are able to take the appropriate reaction.

LCDR Rabbi Jaron Matlow I believe what you need do, is ensure you check the pop-up page where it shows similar posts, and if something looks close, then click on it and check it. If they are the same, then cease work. This seems to be happening more and more, and my sense posters are not reading the pop screen and/or checking the other posts.

Col, I truly did not see your post come up when I started mine... thanks though, I will definitely try to be more careful...

LCDR Rabbi Jaron Matlow - No harm no foul, I have done the same thing. I think not only reading the headlines that up help, but sometimes you to click on the links and see what they posted. I have found more than once, that others have posted the same topic and link.
This was pretty bad yesterday with the shooting. The Admins were pretty busy yesterday.

LCDR Rabbi Jaron Matlow - Why would you flag SSG Carlos Madden? Or do you mean "tag" him as to bring it to his attention? Normally we "flag" members that violate standards so I'm just making sure we all use the same type of verbiage. I know it seems like we are merging lines but I'm just trying to keep things as clear as possible.

I see, thank you for correcting my use of terminology. Of course I meant tag him...
SSG Carlos Madden
LCDR Rabbi Jaron Matlow Admins at all levels have the ability to merge discussions, so please let at least one of us know.

Understood. I don't really know who all the admins are... I hadn't heard your name, for instance, before Elizabeth told me to contact you...
