I'm joining the Army. 15T UH 60 mechanic.

It’s depends on if you’re active or Guard.

I can only offer what I’ve heard about active. From what I’ve gathered, it’s rare for a new Tango fresh out of IET to end up in a flight company. They usually go to a maintenance company or support battalion and then get picked up from there if they shine.

On the Guard side, because of the way the Guard is structured and units are dispersed, it’s not uncommon for a new soldier to end up in a flight company. I’m at Ft Eustis right now, and there are a few Guard E4s and below that are going to a flight company with no aviation or Black Hawk experience.

Right now, just worry about getting through basic and AIT. Once you get to your unit, then you can start expressing a desire. You have to back up that desire with effort though. They’re not going to take someone that they see as lazy or unmotivated.

Also, aviation is a very small world. There’s a good chance that someone at the school house knows someone where you’re going. So keep your nose clean at Eustis and don’t be an idiot.

Start off by learning how to be a 15T......study the manuals and learn what you can about the aircraft. Stay motivated and always show a willingness to LEARN more. Those are the qualities that most flight company’s look for. Also it helps to try and maintain Class III medical standards(i.e. flight physical)

What you need to do to set yourself apart is to not want to set yourself apart. A “Crew” is a team. Put the team ahead of yourself and that’s all you ever need to know about how to be successful in a crew or small team.

Study hard, obey all orders, show up early, run a fast 2 mile and do lots of pushups.

I’m a NG AGR CE and right now our new little Tangoes are getting booted down to D Co until they learn where to put their feet and can board like everyone else. Best advice is get in the books and be dependable. You’re on your own in the back eventually and that’s a big deal.

PV2 (Join to see) - I tagged two experience Aviation NCOs that may be able to answer your question. By tagging them they now know about the discussion and may participate. Uncle Mark was on OH58s and SGT Barrie on UH60s. your discussion tags are relevant but may not have the penetration and dissemination to get you an answer.

What is it that I need to do to be a crew chief. I know most of it is just do my job but what will set me apart from everyone else?? And does rank have anything to do with it??

Nah...that has nothing to do with hit. I got picked up for CE as an E-2 in my first unit in Korea. It really is luck of the draw...I was part of a phase team that came in under time/budget and got noticed. Just learn the aircraft and how to maintain it well and you'll get noticed and picked up. That extra shit will get you points for promotion but won't help for much else...unless maybe you apply for SOAR

yes, Show up to your new duty with "extra shit" like Air Assault badge, you'll skip the line maintenance company, and find yourself in a pickle suit, calling in hot gas. however; closing out a logbook at 3am, in MOPP 32, not fun.
