What impact will becoming a USMC Reservist have on my life and small business?

Hello,
I am new to the site in hopes to find some answers that i have been looking for forever. First a little about myself. I am 18 and am still in high school. I recently started my own excavation business. And have been recently been looking into the Marines. Well ever since i was little i used to eat sleep and breathe the Marines. But certain things in my life have set me off course and i had know interest anymore. But some how i got bit by the bug again and am looking into the Marines again. I dont know what it is. I just feel that if i never scratch this itch that i will later on regret it. It has nothing todo with pay or anything. Theirs just something about being a complete badass top of the food chain Marine that appeals to me. But as a small business owner I have some concerns. I know that boot camp is 13 weeks. If i can time that right that wont be a problem for me since here in MA excavation is seasonal because of snow. So i have all of winter to get my ducks in a row since i will have no work. My problem lies after boot camp. I am looking to go in as a reservist since active for me is sadly not an option. So what happens after boot camp? i know i have to goto MOS school after but i have heard from other Marines that have gone to MOS school for 6 months. Winter is long but its not that long. Does the time go based off of what MOS you choose or is that just an around averge time it takes todo MOS school? Also i have read that the marines is the only military force that can make you active if need be as a reservist. What are the odds of this happening. Is their something you have todo to go active? Or can one day you just wake up and they can be like ya your going over seas buddy. Obviously again as a small business owner i cant have that. I cant one day be at the job site than be like yea see ya later guys im gone for 9 months. Something like that would crush my business. Another concern I have are drill weekends. I have heard that a "drill weekend" can turn into a drill week. Is this true? If so how many times does this usually happen? Because as the boss man i can have my guys cover me for a day and can definetly sacrifice one weekend a month for drill. But a whole week. Yea thats a major inconvience for me and my guys. Last is I am from Westfield Mass. I googled the nearest reserve base from me and it says that the nearest one is at westover air force base. This has me confused because well its an air force base. I know that Marines are air land and sea but wouldnt they have their own base not piggy back with the air force. Also if i did somehow mange to be stationed at this base would it be based off my MOS or location. And is it the same base every time i have drill or do i hop between bases? Because other than westover which is only the next town over the next nearest reserve base it 90 min away and the other 2hrs in the other direction. Out towerds the shore Also any pointers on what the best way to approach this or what MOS would suite my needs for my situation would be greatly appreciated. Thats all. Thankyou for reading.

Hi Connor,
Since you're from MA, there's a good chance you'll end up at the USMC battalion based in Devens. SSgt Timothy Prevost has been there for a couple years now and might be able to provide some inside information about what it's like in the unit, being in the reserve, battalion OPTEMPO, etc.

Conner Fleury Welcome to RallyPoint, and congratulations on running your own business. Below are some sites that will answer some of your questions. I would gather as much information as you can, and then talk to a Marine Recruiter. Consider letting someone run your business in your absence or make other arrangements. There is no MOS or branch of service where you can choose the hours or days that you will work. I served four years active duty and will tell you that there are no guarantees as to your work schedule. If needed, you could be mobilized for active duty, and you would have no say in the matter. Westover Air Force base is an Air Force Reserve base.

Well if you feel you will be in MOS school for 6 months maybe you need to reconsider another branch or not joining at all cause what will you do if get activated and have to be gone longer than 6 months?

That was one of my concerns. Ive been trying to find information on MOS school but i cant anywhere. Any idea what MOS will take the least amount of time? Or what a good middle of the road time frame is for a typical MOS. Ive been reading up on being active. People are saying theirs a do not activate list that their recruiter or someone put the on. Is this true? Also i have been reading peoples storys and experiences. Sounds like with the war is going now and has been going. Their has been a high demand for boots on the ground. But that possibility is still there especially now that Trumps in office.

Yes 12 B combat engineer or 11b is high for the Army now. The army have schools for range from 4weeks to over a year. When I joined the army my total time trainingb basic was 5 months! If you truly wanna serve then serve but remember what you getting into.

I forgot to add. That since i own my own business obvously i don't receive the benefits i would at a 9 to 5 job. Does anyone know what the benefits include if any that a reservist gets and how long they last and or how long you have to be in for to receive them.
