What do you think of Personal Nuclear Devices

SFC Pate.  Most of the concepts underlaying development of our large scale nuclear fission, fusion, and shaped charge devices were worked out by Oppenheimer, Teller, and Ulam in 1940-50s. Subsequent developments in computer modeling have enabled oprimization of the design of these devices to achieve various flexible combinations of controllable size, shape, yield, impulse shape, spectral emissions, etc.  But, given use of chemical explosives driving the rapid assembly of what is in essence a prompt fast reactor core, the are practical limitations on minimizing weapon size etc.  More modern use of high power laser ablation of a miniscule fission / fusion pellet may bring thermonuclear microfission / thermonuclear microfusion into reality and potentially enable the creation of far smaller devices or nuclear weapons that may be triggered entirely without the use of special nuclear materials.  But, if these concepts have been implemented, no one is talking today. In the end, cost in terms of weapons production, maintenance, refurbishment, security, and post detonation cleanup may well preclude any further significant development of tactical nuclear weapons.  As the ARTI guys say:  you drop it you own it ! ! !  Warmest Regards, Sandy
