What do the S1 and G1 designations stand for? Can anyone recommend any web resources for reference for the different military designations? Some of it is still new to me.

You can reference FM 41-10 for detailed by section info. The S in S1 means Staff Position. The G in G1 stands for general staff position. When I got my first General Staff Job as G6 SGM (General Staff Communications), I did not know what each General Staff section did by their numbers, with the exception of the ones I had dealt with on a regular basis. During the first staff meeting at special troops BN they had section plates in front of them so I wrote them all down for future reference. I can still remember G 1-9 but I am willing to bet the numbers have gone higher since I retired. Here are the ones I remember off the top of my head. G1 personnel, manning, admin, G2 intelligence, security, G3 Operations, G4 Logistics, G5 Plans, G6 Communications, G7 Training and or Combat Engineers, G8 Finance and resource management, G9 civil or public affairs.

CPT (Join to see) to build on LTC Stephen C. link, skip down to the continental staff numbers and letter convention....they also do combinations of these. Example Joint Operations Staff J3. Current Ops in that staff J33. The Logistics Section in the operations shop J34. Operations Plans (short term) J35. Long range plans J5. The most powerful staff in the US Army: Army G357 Operations, Plans, and Training. I served as a Deputy Chief of Operations in ISAF in the CJ33 combined, joint operations, current operations.

At the BDE and below they will be the straight shops S1, S2, S3, S4...the outlier is in a logistics unit there is a non-numbered staff section called Support Operations. They are a fusion of S3 and S5 that coordinates the delivery of sustainment and Logistics. Not to be confused with the Brigade/BN S4. The Support Operations Officer is to Logistics what the Fire Support Coordinator is to Brigade Artillery Fires.
