What courtesies are required when the Secretary of the Army walks into your office/building and how do you address him??

I would address him as Mr. Secretary, offer him a cold glass of water from the drinking fountain, and pat him on the back for a sarcastic "job well done." Then I'd take him on a tour through the high volume of BS you have to go through on a daily basis, and when he leaves, say, "Thank you Mr. Secretary, for visiting our facility. I hope you understand what it's like to work in our office and I invite you to come back for a visit any time. Quarterly reports are due on *whatever date* and we could use some help getting those together if you'd like a break for your daily routine."

OK "SGT". Sounds to me like you assume you know what any other person's experience has been. You have no idea, and while it wasn't all military, I spent my share of time in federal work after I left the armed services and received my degree. It may be a jaded response, but certainly appropriate for a number of high level federal civilians I've had the pleasure of working with. Honestly, I can't speak for any other person's experience, I have found that sometimes a tongue in cheek response is the best way to broach serious and necessary issues that need to be discussed.

Would it not be "Sir" or "Mr. Secretary"? just like you would the President. During conversation, I would intersperse the two. The first time you address him it would be "Mr. Secretary" though.
