The "prove you're hurt" mentality again. Time for Operation Clean Sweep at the VA.

Some of the doctors are running scared that is why you are not getting pain meds . They passed a senate bill to punish doctors who give out pain meds . Nerve and soft tissue damage is hard to disprove as it is to prove . And that does nothing for your pain . Just leaves you in a waiting game being passed around from clinic to clinic and to doctor after doctor . They think in time you will just go away and give up . I know this from my own experience . I was run over by a 2 1/2 ton tuck , I complained about my stomach for years in pain . 18 year later some one took the time to look at the problem . found my stomach was pushed up next to my heart . causing heart pain and other problems too. I am on my 4th surgery for this problem looking at one more come this week . or they will push it off a little longer . Don't ever give up on your health . Don't let any one say it is nothing . Pain meds don't fix the problem . They only help live with it . take care and good luck with your fight.

The ignorance is unfathomable and without a doubt inexcusable! What a disgrace to this veteran that has given more than most, to include a limb!

Unfortunately this happens all the time. The problem is documentation. If it is not documented, it did not happen! I was always told this...but I am guilty as well for passing out Motrin like candy and not documenting.
Boils down to this:
DoD is half paper and half electronic. Everything electronic has to be printed and sent into the VA. This does not always happen. And to top that the VA is not allowed access to DoD electronic Health Records! President George Bush Sr made it mandatory to transfer all med records to electronic and it never happened. A simple fix to save a ton of headaches.
I do not blame the VA Raters for this. I blame DoD and the doctors for not documenting right. Raters follow the Code of Regulations and can only rate what is in front of them, which is not the veteran but files.

you are so right in what you said . I fight a uphill battle every time I have a problem that spans back to my years of service . Poor record keeping to start with during active duty and after . If we knew what we know to day we could have known to ask for copies of records or knew what to look for in things needing to be corrected in the records .

HMC, thanks. Also, there is another facet to consider here. There are ALWAYS two sides to every story. This story was broadcast on FOX News, which has a very definite slant. I am not doubting or calling this vet a liar, but we don't know ANY of the facts of this case. You can't judge the case without those facts.

For ALL Active Duty reading this; make sure EVERYTHING gets into your record. If you're deployed, check your records for accuracy BEFORE you redeploy home. Far too often, even in this day of electronic records, things don't get entered.
When you get out, DO NOT leave without a copy of your entire Medical Record. The military is required to give you this copy. Don't let them bluff you out of getting it.
If you DON'T have copies of your records, download form SF-180 (google it) and complete and send it in. Your records may not be complete, but at least it'll be better than nothing.
IF you served during the period of ELECTRONIC records, the VA gets your records when you get out.
The rub is for those of us who served before that time; and for deployed combat troops, because far too many medics in the field didn't make record notes, clinics at OPs, FOBs or major bases, didn't turn records in, and if you were a Guard soldier under Title X, and assigned to another unit, they never turned your records back to your Guard unit.
Basically it's a soup sandwich, and like it or not, it falls on each service member and vet to dry it out...
