Utah NG Swimsuit Calendar...

I stumbled across a story this evening about the photographing and video taping of a swimsuit calendar utilizing personnel, equipment, and resources form the Utah NG. I wanted to post the link, but the photo that went with it I did find appropriate for this forum. What I do find appropriate though is that conduct like this is not in keeping with our Army Values and is definitely not the message that we want to portrait to the public about our Profession.

Again, I will not post the link, but I am sure that if you cut and paste my topic in your search engine, you will find the story. Unsat on so many levels.

When I was at Fort Lewis, there was a female CPT that went on HBO's real sex with her husband talking about "the lifestyle" they also used to go on the local radio show on Thursdays. She was fine until they asked her what she did and she told them that she flew Chinooks at Fort Lewis and the name of the unit. That video made it all the way up to the Pentagon, you know, lots of people had to watch the show to make sure she did that!!! She lost her commission, but was allowed to continue in the Army and keep flying as long as she never went on the radio show again. That next Thursday she went on the show and said, "You'll never believe what the Army did to me!"

There have been way to many pilots in trouble for those types of things. Having been flying for 21 years, all I can say is that about 20 folks popped into my brain reading your post until is was CPT, then it was cut 25% to about 15 it could have been. The Army didn't do anything as you and I well know, and those videos always seem to end up in someone's hands.....

Well now it is going to be interesting to see what levels of leadership were involved. Just when you think you've seen it all. This is one of those situations that will put all of the branches under an even bigger microscope. I'm sure there were some leaders on the camp that knew this was going on. I can't wait to see what kind of "hand slap" punishment comes from this incident. Bad troops outshining the good ones and giving all of us a black eye.

In times of reduction and budget cuts, it is spotlights like this that makes everyone question why we need funding for equipment and personnel. A foolish thing that will cost all of the branches.

Some of my random and conflicting thoughts:

- Good initiative; bad judgement
- How did the relationship between the producers and the soldiers begin?
- Producers should offer some temp work to the guys getting punished, but probably won't
- Should've had the sense to tell the producers to not mention who, what, or where they were doing this.
- Fundraising for Help for Heroes mitigates this significantly for me and I suspect was part of the motivation.
- That doesn't make it right.
- Access to facilities raises OPSEC concerns
- Not a SHARP issue. Not every instance of libido inspired error rises to the level of assault or harassment. If that were the case, Hooters should be an off-limits establishment.
- Although reassignment from USSF may be appropriate, this shouldn't end an Army career. Find a home elsewhere and do good things for God and Country. A Soldier's career should be allowed a limited recovery from an error like this
- If I were an Infantry 1SG I might press these guys into my company to share the skills they learned in USSF. But I'd keep them on a short leash. Shoot, move, communicate; but I have my eye on you.
- If you're forced to retire over this, they may be doing you an unintentional favor.
- I'm skeptical that many in our leadership would do better in a similar situation. We've a few GOs who've done far worse and were forced to retire with fatter pensions. Lead by example.
- Many of the calendar's "partners" are tactical gear manufacturers. We've a brand-name fetish with gear and distributors that's unhealthy.
- Despite your giggles, "fetish" isn't always a dirty word.
- Just because I think of doing similar things doesn't mean I act on it.

Prior to SF becoming a branch, SF qualified soldiers were frequently rotated into conventional units. On occasion it could be a rehabilitative assignment. A good example is the late MoH recipient CSM Franklin Miller who was kicked out of 3rd SFG(A) by his CSM. He then served multiple tours in Vietnam with conventional units. He then eventually returned to SF as a Reconnaissance Team leader in SOG.
