I don’t know who on RP served in those locations since a lot of my interaction has been with the Vietnam demographic
Thoughts?

I was a Desert Storm vet and my husband deployed to Iraq immediately after...I am not surprised by what is happening now with Iran; they have been a regional problem for years

I enlisted in 1982 and we had been "At Odds" with Iran since 1978. Now I think we should have bombed about half the country flat over the hostage affairs, other than that, I really never seen much difference between the Iranians and the Saudis. When I tried to explain why the "Sunni" weren't Moderate, I usually got a lot of crap. I will point out now that there wasn't a single Iranian on 9/11.

You know if they WANT to live in the 13th Century, under Sharia Law, and live their traditional way, then what business is it of ours, UNTIL they export that to our shores...then it becomes our business....

They are two independent countries with differing views, cultures, laws and ways of thinking. There independence was part of the original plan. What direction they took was always based on where the country would stand politically once on there feet.

I personally feel no different, within a month of capturing The king-Pin I could tell that it would come back in our face. We ( the US) should not be shocked. We are not rulers, rather advocates for democracy who lead by example (usually), we go in divide, train, educate and leave. What independent countries do there after is up to them.

I think we suck at being the white hats in recent years and we really suck at nation building. I held out some hope for Iraq before the State Department sent the Army and most of the Police home as part of De-Ba'athification. I'm not the only one that knew that was a mistake. The other part was pretending that these groups were ready for a democracy. We took ten years in a homogenous country like Japan before the Military Governor allowed them to make decisions without his blessing.
Yes, Saddam was a monster even by Middle Eastern Standards, but we sure didn't have much of a plan on what to do when he was gone.

CPT Lawrence Cable - We need to understand that in many places in this world, the people do not want to have an American style democracy. Not everyone has an "American that is trying to get out"
Looking at the total crap show that American Society has devolved into recently, can you blame countries that have traditional values, even if different from ours for NOT wanting American influence? Crap Sir, in the middle east they might not know what toilet paper is but they don't argue about which toilet to use.

Those of you who were in the Desert Shield/Desert Storm era, how do you feel about the US and Iran back at odds?

I don't think we have ever not been at odds with Iran...except that one time when Obama shipped them $400Million as an appeasement. I th ink there are two different country beliefs that will never come together.

Nothing forcefully has been done to Iran and they are working hard to lead an Arab nation as long as they believe like they do. Short of a change in leadership, we are stuck.

I enlisted in 1979 and retired in 2004. We have always been at odds with Iran since the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty in 1979.

I was not aware that the US and Iran have not been "at odds" at any time since the mullahs took over.

Maj Kim Patterson I'm Not Overly Concerned. We've had issues with them since 79. I Handled the Messages for Iran-Contra. During Desert Storm/Southern Watch I was more Concerned with Keeping Sadam from Getting the Means to Restore His WMD. Now during Desert Strike 96 I was involved with Doing "Freedom of Navigation" Exercises Camping My Happy Ass 16 Miles off Bushehr Iran annoying the Holy Crap out of them and Listening to their Comms.
