For those of you who are still on Active Duty I wanted to make sure that you were aware that if you wanted to pass your GI Bill onto your children you must do this prior to you getting out or retirement. Nothing was mentioned during my transition seminars about this nor could I find anything pertaining to this. When I contacted to transfer it the VA they told me that I was too late and I should have done that while I was on active duty.<br>

The transferability of the servicemember's Post-9/11 GI Bill is for retention purposes. <br><br>As of 1 August 2013, everyone (very few exceptions apply; some medical) that applies has to agree to serve 4 additional years.

In order to transfer there is a four year service obligation added to your contract. And that service obligation starts on the date that they approve the transfer. This is total BS in that now I can't transfer any of my benefits as that I don't have four years left. I will be out in less than three. This is just another way of nickel and diming the service member.

SSG Sutter, you should check on that. I medically retired after 15 years and I was able to transfer benefits to my wife when I was about a month out. I was told by the retention NCO that as long as you have over 10 years, you should be able to request it with the 4 year commitment being waived.

I did check on that SSG Smithberg. I checked and double checked. It came out in an email, ALARACT/MILPER Message and it is posted on the e-Benifits website. Regardless of time in service or rank, any changes to transfers will incur a 4 year obligation. Unless they changed it in the last 4-6 months that is what I am tracking.

I submitted a 4187 requesting the 4 year commitment be waived, and it got approved. Maybe mine was different because I had retirement orders.

SSG Allan Smithberg - medical retirement is different. During medical retirement is the only time that you can make the transfer without incurring additional time obligation.
