Leader vs. Boss

I finally found the reason why I laugh and disagree 70% of the time when people say they are a leader. I was taught at a young age that leaders act a certain way. I also knew that anytime a person used the word Boss it wasn't a good thing. The picture below sums thing up very well. Are we truly developing leaders, or are we being bosses who attempt to develop leaders who then turn into bosses themselves because they see how you act?

How can someone call himself/herself a leader if no one is willing to follow them?

MSG, if I decided not to follow you what would happen? We in military are not afforded the ability not to follow someone who is not being a true leader.

Good question.

I can only talk about my experience. I saw many Soldiers in OIF hide, and go on sick call to avoid going outside the wire when some NCO's and some officers were in charge of their convoys.

I had all my soldiers volunteer for whatever detail I got myself into, to include, escort logistic convoys through Tal' Afar.

If you decide not to follow me, I would put you aside and ask what is going on and if you think that there is a better way to do what we were going to do. If there is, I believe that only a not so smart person would do tasks the hard way in combat for no particular reason.

I also need to look at myself and how I am performing; and, performance doesn't mean scoring 300 on the PT test, to me it means working smart, thinking outside the box, and leading from the front.

That is inspiring to hear, it is not often you here that leaders in combat ask subordinates if they have an idea. Although history says the leaders that do get the most out of their men and they all return home.

I think both styles are fostered by mentors and peers.  I completely agree with the comment of are we developing leaders or acting as bosses who then develop other bosses.  However, the fact that you know the difference between the two enables you to train your Soldiers and side bar with your peers on how to be a true leader.

Sir,

I agree, we need to do better to understand the difference of the two. I think many people believe they are showing what being a leader is, and in some way they are showing a certain leadership style that is different from the leader they should be.
