Is anyone here an AMEDD recruiter or have experience with direct commission? I have some questions about the process.

I just finished my MSW and am interesting in returning to the Guard or Reserve through Direct Commission. I am a former enlisted Army Guardsman. I know that you need an LCSW to get in as a full social worker. Can I come in as some kind of behavioral health officer or health administration officer? Is it better to wait until I have the LCSW (and come in at a higher rank)?

You can be brought in as a 70B until you accrue the clinical hours needed.

You need your LCSW to be eligible for a DA as a 73A. We do have the SWIP program for Regular Army.

SWIP is a one time a year board. It stands for Social Worker Internship Program. If you have completed your MSW you are able to apply. You would be commissioned as a 1LT and complete your supervision on Active Duty, take the licensing exam and then earn you LCSW. You would then serve for a short time on Active Duty. After your obligation is complete you could choose to continue your service of ETS. I would contact an AMEDD recruiter in your area.

I am also interested in the SWIP Program, however I will not have my MSW until May 2017. I am currently studying Mental Health, Clinical Social Work at Columbia University. I'm interning at Manhattan VA and will be interning in the fall for the academic year at Walter Reed. I'm weighing my options between SWIP and Reserves for 73A. I can get my license in NY in May 2017 once I graduate, but it will just be my LMSW, not LCSW. I'm wondering how competitive it will be for SWIP in 2017 and what kind of package I will need to submit, my former boss is a MoH recipient and offered to write me a letter of recommendation. Also what are the PT requirements?

Hey Gina. I am in the same boat. I will be interning at the Baltimore VA in the Fall, and volunteer at Walter Reed (outpatient behavioral health). I decided to intern at the VA since it was paid and close to school. Anyway, feel free to email me as we embark on this highly competitive process. The PT test varies by age... you can google it. You have to do 2 minutes of push ups, 2 min of sit-ups and a 2 mile run. The pace has not been published for 2017, but I can email you the one for 2016 for your review.

Normally all masters level program applying for AMEDD comes in as 1LT, 73A is one of them. It would be best if you can come in with your LCSW and then you can apply directly. Its competitive for sure and not automatic. As the MSC Branch is looking for the best from around the country

SFC A.M. Drake - Yes I had my degree when I applied and boarded.. I have approximately 8 years of experience in IT. .. I applied for Reserve.. which is where I am now. Just got commissioned on the 7th.

Yes the 70D Consultant was not kind to you? I'm wondering because you did not have a BS in the IT arena, if that played any bias in it, more than likely it did. I bet you got a lot of constructive credit for 1LT for sure. You could have requested a redo because of your experience level maybe that would have helped. As stated earlier each review is different. I had a 70B process as a CPT because he was already a HSS already at the VA and wanted the Army as additional, he actually wanted 70A, so a compromise was CPT

Actually we worked with our sister services pretty well as they close out their missions early in the FY so we swap a lot on other specialities. Not sure if they do that across the country but where I'm at it's pretty common. Lastly I'm retired now but I still have knowledge in this field like 15yrs worth. Have a great day

Hey there SFC Drake. I have held a LCSW for about 1 year and have 15 years of experience in field. MSW Concentration Mental Health, Focus Military Social Work from USC Los Angeles. All internships focused on clinical and leadership roles, with focus on military family and refugee and immigrants. Specialty is Multi-systemic Therapy and family therapy.
Currently living in Maine. Held several supervisory positions and currently up for promotion to senior management at the company I work for.
What would my perspective Commissioning rank end up as? 0-3 minimum?
