Greeting-of-the-day for Non-Commissioned Officers: Did that just disappear off of the face of the earth? Or is it just our fault?

How many times has a soldier walked right passed you and not even bat an eyelash, much less give you the greeting of the day? Then you go on to see that soldier salute an officer and give them the greeting of the day. I think we have lost our touch! NCO's what do you think???

If you let them walk by you without giving you a greeting than you are adding to the problem. You should never be so busy that you don't have time to stop and drop some knowledge. SGT (Join to see) also makes a good point although I would challenge her on the comment that officers always reply. Seems the return greeting of the day from officers is, "what's up", "how you doin" or "hey", not all but the majority that I salute...I stop and drop knowledge on them too.
I usually initiate the greeting, whether it's an officer or an enlisted Soldier, I also greet fellow NCOs. If the enlisted fail to respond, I drop them, um, I mean I drop knowledge on them. Make corrections when you see something wrong, don't just walk by.

CSM (Join to see), why is it unsat for them to reply with, "What's up", "How are you", etc.? I'd much rather receive that reply from an officer than have a junior NCO ignore me and walk by silently. I don't look to officers to show me what's right; I look to NCOs to be the standard bearers.

I think "How are you" is appropriate but, do you reply by saying "I am fine sir, how are you"? It's kind of like starting a conversation when a simple "good morning" is more appropriate. I said "how you doin" not "how are you". "What's up" is unprofessional in my opinion, we are not on the block nor are we peers (in most cases).
You may not look at officers to show you what's right but, they should be the more professional Soldier. That is not always the case but it should be. NCOs that do not return the greeting of the day to junior enlisted are setting a bad example and if I see it, I will crush them.
One other thing, when you give the greeting of the day give it clearly don't mumble. If you don't recognize the rank immediately just say good morning. Half the time I can't tell if someone is giving me the greeting of the day or mumbling that I am an assclown.

SGM Mike Oldsen, I detest the greeting, 'How are you'. It is so patentedly a ration of BS that I only use it for friends I haven't seen for 5 or 10 years.
A simple 'Hello' seems to say all I need to say.

CSM (Join to see) your initial comment here reminds me of a quote:
