Ft.Ord was my first duty station after basic. I was in Aco 1-18 Inf. Buffalos, we were the next battalion over from 2-9 Manchuse. In fact that's where our chow hall was at. We called it planet Ord, cause of the constant cloud cover. I ended up being transferred to Ft.Hood because of the closure, I'll never forget our MOP gear runs, our 12-24 mile road marches. I really had a blast there!!

Nothing but sun and blue skies back in 70's. Global Climate Change may have ruined it.

I remember doing our 2-mile runs on the beach in the fog! LOVED PLANET ORD!

When I reenlisted from civilian life for 6 months I was asked where did I want to go and I said back to Ft. Ord. I could have picked any assignment in the world. But Ord was my love. I had a bachelor house in Pacific Grove and later a family home in Seaside. Its why I live in San Francisco now. I cannot afford to live in Monterey .

I also had the privilage of serving at Fort Ord and the 7th Infantry (L). I was a team leader and squad leader in 4-21 Infantry "Gimlets" from 1986-1987. I loved it there, I used to run my squad for PT to the beach every day, they were in the best shape of their lives. I taught and coached my squad Boxing. Four of my soldiers and myself won the Post Boxing Smokers in 1986. We deployed to Hawaii for a month, and they gave us a whole week off, that was awesome. My stay there was short, but memorable. My favorite place on Fort ord was Stillwell Hall, right on the beach. I would go out there to read, relax, and recharge my batteries. I still visit Fort Ord now-a-days. It is changed, but I rember it at its best.

I remember the old theater. Drill Sergeants used to use it for a torture chamber. First they would wake us up earlier than normal, take us out on an exhausting run through the dunes on a freezing, cold day, feed us a good breakfast, then we would go to the theater for boring training films, told not to sleep, and catching hell if we did. I swear they cranked the heat up in there too.

I remember! I was there from 85-89. 7/7th ADA. I was first in A Battery, 1st Platoon then sent to 3rd Platoon “Third Herd!” A fun time where I met many friends who I still keep in touch with on Facebook. The great weather, many trips to the Bay Area and the proximity to my home town made Ft Ord a memorable experience!

SSG Michael Noll - lol! Lucky I guess. I remember something about President Reagan signing a bill where if stateside was your first enlistment, you would stay stateside unless you re-enlisted. A cost savings measure.
