FBI suggests scrubbing social media: are you aware of the potential stateside ISIS threat ?

I refuse to live in fear within my own country.

Well, I think everyone should try and increase the security of their personal information on their social media accounts because it is generally a good idea, regardless of this specific threat.

But, I live in a community right next to a Military Base. Everyone on my street is either Active Duty, Retired, a DA Civilian, or a Veteran. Kind of hard to hide that fact.

If they want to be able to successfully target military or veterans, they are going to target communities in and around military bases. Those communities are also the most supportive to Military, so good luck with that.

Maintaining situation awareness is one thing, but understanding the amount of information that can be easily obtained via social media and other open sources is vital in the digital world. All it takes is a name and some other basic information, and anyone with the desire can find out enormous amounts of information about you, I know this from experience. While it is nearly impossible to avoid leaving a virtual footprint today, everyone must remain vigilant and intensely aware of what they put out into cyberspace. Informing and instructing our family members in personal security is just as important for the same reasons.

This is not to say that we should "live in fear" but we should be aware if what we do and the impact it could have.

Like it was already stated, we need to maintain and keep our situational awareness. There is always someone out there that has us in their sights. Being a MP we cons t antly have to watch for warnings from gangs in the local area. I am with MSGT Copeland and refuse to live in fear in my own country. My only fear is that they will use my family to get to me and then God help them.

While I'm with TSgt Joshua Copeland , I also believe in being prepared. Being aware of one's surroundings (also known as situational awareness) and keeping my head on a swivel will keep you alive. Just as there are crackheads, methheads, etc., out there on the streets, now we simply add one more to the list - religious fanatic.

I have already seen this warning and have taken appropriate precaution.

In addition to removing a lot of identifying information, I have restricted my accounts so that even "friends" cannot see everything.

I don't normally have a reaction to the posts I see regarding EBOLA in Dallas, or some threat warnings in the area. That being said, this warning I have to heed as we have no way of knowing who the ISIS sympathizers are, and or in what area. If I didn't have a family, I come across a little more cockstrong, but having a family I must consider their safety and measure my (re)actions.

SGM (Join to see) This just makes me even more concerned that although our names and pics may be obscured depending on one's RP security settings that the content of our threads are on the search engines for all to see. As much as this pains me to say this, this almost makes me want to leave RP because I am so concerned. Makes me wonder how many will leave due to this?

Just a hunch but I don't think ISIS would find them selves welcome in this crowd! Just saying :-)
