Not as a separate school. If you think it should be a requirement for all soldiers to get some SERE training then it should be incorporated into Basic Training.

There are aspects of it that could be taught in a classroom environment that could benefit, and be adapted for most Soldiers. But the complete course as it stands is simply something I feel is neither appropriate nor necessary for a brand new soldier. It used to be open to soldiers outside USASOC, though I only knew one Soldier(11B) who took the time to coordinate with USAJFKSWCC and attend it of his own accord. We all thought he was crazy at the time. It's an exceptional school that teaches a great deal more than what most think of it as, but unfortunately, it's just not an option to send everyone who wants to attend, much less require everyone to complete it

It would be a waste of time and resources for the vast majority of Soldiers. I understand the arguments that we are most likely facing assymetric battlefields in the future and 'all Soldiers are at risk' but, honestly, I don't see support personnel needing this. Now, if you suggested incorporating it into all the teen series MOSs (11-Infantry, 12-Engineer, 13-FA, 19-Armor) that are the most at risk and making it part of their AIT, that would make more sense.

Can us medics get a piece of that action? Seems like if we don't get killed, we could be an asset to the enemy so we are at risk of getting taken as well. Really I'm just making an argument because I want to go to SERE school. Lol

Some of the aviation guys have it as an option or requirement, they just need to excel and find a unit that has a mission requiring that kind of training. And a medic who wants to attend, and also take their medical abilities to the next level, just needs to want it bad enough to become an SF Medical SGT. If you have the drive, you will be amazed at the opportunities for advancing your skills, and the schools available to you in the 18 series branch you never even knew existed.

Even having every combat arms soldier go to SERE level C is still unfeasible. It would require every grunt and gun bunny to have a SECRET clearance. Not only would the vetting be a cumbersome undertaking, it would also exclude IN, FA, & AR soldiers who aren't US citizens. There could be some other POI developed. But it couldn't be SERE High Risk as we know it.

- Completely agree, SFC Callan. That is why I said it should be incorporated into their AIT and probably not a FULL course.
- As for the Aviators, SGT Scott, I thought they DID get SERE (might be mistaken on that). All Air Force pilots get to have fun at SERE.
- And I understand your arguments, too, SPC Smith. Medics would be a great candidate to get some type of SERE training. You are out with all of those Combat Arms folks on a contiuous basis.
BOTTOM LINE: it is a need but one that is going to be difficult to address given our current "resource strained" environment.
