What have been some of your favorite mottos that you threw around the unit in your day? Just for fun, have you ever wondered what kind of mottos Army cooks like to use?
I hosted a survey through the ranks in one of my old units and the winning result was "Burn it Down." Tongue-in-cheek humor was intended. The change became very popular. Some of my NCOs and I both hated and loved the unit. It was satisfying to respond to every mission tasked to us, or every ridiculous meeting that ran well over an hour, with "Burn it down..."
Other contenders for the company motto:
- Forged in flames.
- From the ashes.
- Recipe for death.
- Shake and bake.
- Grilled to perfection.
- Just add water.
- Heat and serve.
- Chow's on the way.
- We don't play, we sauté.
- Kill 'em and grill 'em.
- Always hungry.
- Show me the bacon.

- Service with a smile.

This is not my favorite, 1LT (Join to see), but the origin of the 8th ID's motto "These Are My Credentials" is worthy of note. Here's the WWII story.
Charles D. W. Canham was promoted to Brigadier General and was named as the Assistant Division Commander of the 8th Infantry Division. It was in this capacity during the surrender of the German garrison at the Port of Brest that Canham spoke the words that would become the 8th Infantry Division's motto. Upon entering the headquarters of General der Fallschirmtruppe (a three-star rank) Hermann-Bernhard Ramcke, a leader of German paratroops, Ramcke demanded to know the lower ranking Canham's credentials as a condition of surrender. Unruffled, Canham pointed to the dirty and tired American soldiers he had brought with him to witness the surrender and said, 'These are my credentials.' The account of this event, which was reported in The New York Times, saw in this spontaneous statement of a combat leader the greatest tribute ever paid to the real power of the American Army, the individual soldier."
