Do you believe the Bill of Rights is outdated and should be either dropped in its entirety or at least rewritten?

My Goddaughter seems to be very representative of many people in her generation in believing that the Second Amendment is totally outdated and needs to be eliminated. As with many on the left, she feels that no individual has any need for a handgun.
Additionally, do we really need the First Amendment since one of its previsions deals with religion and seems to discriminate against atheists and agnostics?
So, how many down votes will I get for even posting a controversial question like this?

Our Bill of Rights continues to provide citizens fair treatment, equal opportunities, and the freedoms protected by our Constitution. All amendments need to stand.

Without the second there can be no other. Anyone who believes that they need to be dropped or rewritten has been indoctrinated by an over-zealous liberal educational system.

The Bill of Rights is a part of the constitution that spells out clearly our responsibilities to each other. The Constitution is an agreement between each and every man, woman, and child in this country stating the principles under which this society is established. and has thrived for over two hundred years. Those rights outlined in the Bill of Rights are there to permit the population to defend that selfsame Constitution. If we aren't able to carry out our responsibilities, there IS no constitution.

The problem with people today is that they don't think strategically. They think in the short term. So while getting rid of the 2A sounds great for dealing with gun violence, not one of them has taken the time to map out the 2nd, 3rd let alone 4th order effects. And they don't understand that once something is taken away, it's neigh impossible to get it back.

Absolutely Correct LTC Labrador. Most people never consider the long term effects of any actions, let alone something this important.

There are mechanisms in place to change the constitution. We are dangerously close to loosing our republic entirely.

SSG McCulley, unless the two major parties wake up and start working for the people OR a real third party rises up that serves the people instead of the party, I am afraid you may be correct. As a student of history, the only other party I have ever see serve itself as much as our present Republican and Democratic Parties was a party that came to power in Germany in the 1930s. It to was primarilarially a Socialist Party and tried to convince the people of the benefits of membership in the party instead of being Citizens of the country. I am not saying the Rs and Ds are exactly the same as the Ns, but they seem to be offering a very familiar Kool Aid.

Rewrite the pay and benefits of politicos that don't work, keep promises, and serve the special interest goons. Do away with the many federal agencies that serve themselves, not the American people. Leave OUR GUNS ALONE! They will be the only resource we have to prevent Monarchy from total take over of all our rights.

Excellent points.
SGT Lopez, your comment on federal agencies is spot on. I posted on another thread a very long list of federal agencies that need to be cut. Needless to say, it was met with derision and insults. LOL.
PO3 Hilts, I agree with your ideas although I think the current timeframe for terms is okay BUT I definitely want term limits of maybe 2 terms. Your idea for the VP is a great one. That's how it was done in the first place. I would support that. I would also support officials going back home (hmmm, term limits??). Can't stand these lifetime politicians. On a side note, I hope Chris McDaniel wins the nomination against Cochran who needs to go.

I believe that the only change that needs to be done, is for government to be minimized. I believe that we as a people should return to the belief of freedom of choice. Government continues to grow at a alarming rate, with the liberties of the people being stripped almost on a daily basis. I IN no way feel that the Constitution and or The Bill of Rights should be changed. To be totally honest with my Brother's in Arms, a total reset of Government is needed.

SGT Cosby,
The Answer boards promotes discussion, which I believe is the very basis of all American ideology, present and past. To lose the ability to discuss and debate would be to lose the ability to be an American.
What you refer to as Communist dribble I would refer to as American freedom. If there was never any discussion of written documents the Constitution wouldn't have been written to begin with and we would still be under control of the British. Freedom of speech and constant betterment is the epitome of American Patriotism.

How is it even possible to elimiate a right that has been "endowed by our Creator?" The Constitution simply informs us of our God-given rights, not our Constitution-given rights, or government-given rights. Even without the Constitution, it is still our right to have freedom of speech, religion, the right to bear arms, etc. No government can change that. These rights are given by a higher power.

I do not believe so. If you asked the average citizen of any other country of the world our position was totally radical. Thinking we could dictate to the all mighty British King and Take our country, form our own country, and GRAB rights. How radical was this group of rebels. Yes, we had won a war a few years prior to the Constitution being Written, but would we be able to hold on to this young country? People and rulers in other countries were watching to see what would happen.

Well, whether or not we always had our rights or we created and took them ourselves, we certainly changed the world. The Constitution was truly a revolutionary document.

I believe we had the rights since the beginning of mankind, it is just a matter of government letting us exercise them. The US is the first government that originally understood that the people should rule and not a centralized government, thus the Constitution tells the branches of government what they CAN'T do, in addition to what they were created for.

I believe it's time to rewrite it to reflect our diversity and to add more protections for Citizens. Our current system hasn't kept up with modernization. This time the authors shouldn't be all white rich men.

This is a patently false statement. The First Amendment protects the freedom OF religion, not the freedom FROM religion.
Perhaps your goddaughter needs to understand that without the Second, even SHE could have no First. Sit her down for a history and civics lesson, as her schools and parents have failed her. Don't be in that line.

The Second Amendment guarantees the provisions of the First Amendment(and others) so if you really want to eliminate the First then eliminating the Second would be the way to go. But, I would caution that the elimination of the Second Amendment would likely never happen. I don't believe it will ever receive enough votes to be eliminated legally. It is too much of a fabric of our country that a large number of people would not abide by it even if it is changed and would lead to a crisis in our country and it's government. On the First Amendment tending to discriminate against atheists and agnostics...i don't see it. I am agnostic theist and do not feel that the First Amendment discriminates against me or my ideals.

Major Lupold, I am afraid that I am seeing the 2nd eroded all over our country. Chicago has some of the most stringent ANTI gun laws in the nation (and the highest gun murder rate). Much of New England and NY is restricting the sale of guns and or capacity or magazines. These are just two of many examples of what I consider illegal restrictions of the 2nd. More are on the way unless the Supremes intervene.
I fully agree with you on the 1st.

MCPO Treants,
I agree...I see this too but what I also see is the ground swell of opposition to the idea that an inanimate object is responsible for individual irresponsibility. I believe that the futility of gun control laws is being brought to the forefront and is obvious how little impact they will have. That is not to say I don't fear the total confiscation of guns or the overproduction of laws against guns that effectively bans them but I think the pendulum is swinging toward the gun owners. Look what happened after Sandy Hook and the overreach of the government. It sparked a run on weapons sales and especially ammunition sales that caused ammunition prices to more than double due to individual stockpiling. It also caused a resurgence of gun ownership which continues to this day. Additionally, The Supreme Court has upheld the Second Amendment in 2008 by striking down the Washington, DC gun ban and stating that the intent of the Second Amendment is for the individual to possess firearms...then in 2010 the Supreme Court disagreed with Chicago's gun ban stating that the 14th Amendment allows the Second Amendment to apply to the states through the incorporation doctrine

Not only are people stockpiling, they are hording ammo. It is impossible to find 22LR almost anywhere in NC. I use this as target ammo to keep accurate and for others to use instead of using more powerful ammo. Just so hard to find and I know some people with thousands of rounds in their closets.

The real sad thing is, that we cant trust our politicians to add new ammendments because they're crooked as shit. However, more relevant to the conversation, no dropping any of the bill of rights. These are our inalienable rights, in addition to those in the constitution, but were not mentioned specifically in the constitution, which would make it easier for governement, groups or individuals to infringe on others rights. Do we not still speak, so should we not be still be allowed freedom of speech? Do crimes, and attrocities nkt still exist in the world, so should we not be allowed the freedom to own the most advanced personal defense weaponry to defend our own? Can't get rid of the bill of rights. It is the foundation that our country is built upon, and the nation has become shaky enough. Remove/rewrite that, and it will crumble.

SFC Wilkins one of the biggest challenges senior NCOs have is to question authority. Often after examining it, we find that there is no reason for change and we are strengthened in our position and support.
