Critical fiber links are being sabotaged out west; sites are particularly venerable when remotely located. Any suggestions?

None that would fix this in the short term. Long term is to go deep and Hardened. Hardened underground tunnels which are secure and large enough to move through in order to inspect and manage. Just a thought. Feasibility of this is limited.

I think you may have hit a possible solution...I know that some airport equipment is being hardened in a similiar manner.

Fiber is set for redundancy in case of accidental breakage, but straight up sabotage, if they hit two points on the same loop, the redundancy breaks down and large groups of people will lose access.
It wouldn't have been a big deal 10 or 15 years ago, but a lot of people have vital assets, such as bank accounts, that they can only access online.
This needs to be a high priority internally.

I agree, but the expense of repair, even if you don't cripple a circuit can start to add up. It's a little disturbing that this is even an issue.
