A couple of my fellow NCO's and I were having a discussion on total Soldier concept today in the motor pool. One NCO said that all Leadership based their opinion of a Soldier solely on PT scores. My counterargument was that we as Leaders should look at what else they bring to the table before recommending them for boards. Although I do agree somewhat that we make assumptions of Soldiers based off of PT scores, but just because you score 300 does not mean you will be a great Leader. Curious to hear your opinions.

Commander’s evaluation of soldier for continued service
IAW AR 601-280, para 3-7, Commanders should evaluate all potential reenlistees under the “whole Soldier/person” concept. Those Soldiers who are not considered suited for future military service should be considered for immediate administrative separation or initiation of a bar to reenlistment under the provisions of chapter 8 of AR 601-280.

Thanks for the response MSG, but i know of several instances when the authority/opinion of the first line supervisor feeling that a Soldier is not ready, only to get trumped because PSG's 1SG's, or even Commanders like the Soldier.

A Soldier's individual APFT score is quantifiable....ill-informed leaders that base performance solely on such an individual assessment continue to breed ill-informed leaders.
Break the cycle and use the provided regulatory guidance.
