My retroactive determination from the VA stretches back to the end of 2013, I had submitted a 1040X to adjust the taxable income on my Retirement. My initial request to DFAS was to have an adjusted 1099R to show that my entire Retirement was being taxed - they don't do that. The direction I received from DFAS was to submit the 1040X with all VA documentation I may have. The only documentation I had was the determination letter that specifically said the retroactive dates.

Well, apparently, that isn't enough for the IRS because I received a letter requesting more "proof". Has anyone else experienced this? How am I supposed to come up with anything more detailed that what I already sent?

Call the IRS hotline, and ask what forms they consider valid "proof."

I know this sounds crazy, but the IRS hotline is actually filled with helpful people, when something is messed up. About 5-10 years ago, I had a return get messed up through no fault of my own (they returned half the amount). I called them up, they pulled my file and said "WTF?" and started the process of fixing it over the phone. Took 3 months to get it (which they explained at the outset), but the process was simple and painless.

The only thing I can think of is to go into ebenefits. There are different benefit verification letters available for you to download and print.

That was the first thing I tried, but the EBenefits VA letters really only state that I'm receiving a portion of my Retirement from the VA. There aren't any letters available that indicate the retroactive date. My 2015 return should be fine since my 1099R will reflect everything, it's just amending the 2014 return that is troublesome.

for the IRS, you need to create a 1040X for each year in Question! So, you have to go back to DFAS, and have them recalculate the pay per year!
