With all of us having our time consumed congratulating our NCOs who made the SFC list, make sure that you remember to properly counsel your NCOs who did not make the list. Read the SFC Board AAR on the HRC page and balance that off your NCO's promotion board file. Counsel the NCO on items other than the obvious correspondence courses, college degree, and SSD. Go with the importance of the NCOER, taking on challenging duty positions, and earning additional qualifications/certifications. Do you have a certain method to counseling your NCOs in this situation?

**DA Pam 600-25, NCO Professional Development Guide**

Besides the board AAR, which, in my opinion is too late and non-specific, the BEST source for PRE-BOARD counseling (but can be used post-board, too), is the Career Management Field's (CMF) NCO Professional Development Guide.

This is the single source in which NCOs can measure themselves against and it's used by board members in lieu of MOS proponent briefings.

This was my seventh look for SFC, and I have never had anyone discuss with me my career.  Its not for lack of asking but I wish someone would tell me what it is Im doing wrong, and where Im falling short compared to my peers.  Its almost as if me fast tracking has been my downfall and I do worry that eventually Im going to be QSP'ed because Ive been stagnant at one rank too long.

SSG McNichol, I wish I was in a position to help you on a personal level. What I can say is what I've seen in other Soldiers' files. The AAR for most boards really dwell on the SR comments on the NCOER. Did you know that there's a huge difference between "promote now", "promote ahead of peers", and "promote immediately"? It also helps when several years' worth of ratings are consistent, ie your last 3 years all say 1/1, among the best, promote immediately so SFC, already performs at a platoon sergeant level, for example. Also, make sure that your duty positions, and duty descriptions, are leadership positions. I've seen a lot of Soldiers jump to grab positions in operations and similar positions, but they never got enough leadership time first. Make sure you have at least 3-5 years of rated time leading Soldiers before heading to a staff position. Again, I'm not on a board and I'm no expert, but I did have 2 of my NCOs make this previous SFC list and I've always paid attention to the trends so that I can guide my Soldiers towards advancement.

Thank you SFC Deason.  I fast tracked to SSG and only have two ratings as leadership positions.  One as a squad leader (SGT), and one as a Section Sergeant (SGT Promotable getting pinned the last month of my rating period).  In the 8 years since I became a SSG, I have been assigned as a Technical Inspector (6 years), Orderly Room NCOIC (10 Months, with 5 Soldiers under me), and Mayor Cell Operations NCO (10 Months With three Soldiers under me).

It is getting tough out there. To much being spent. Drones are the thing of the future.
